We could ask PKH to do the thing where when you type "Lyle" it changes to something else and just let this thread disappear.

Due to the issues and risk of getting it closed, the CGKA has no position on Lyle and isn't in the business of controlling people.

Instead the CGKA is working to provide an alternative launch. We are working on developing Rowena as an alternative, which is rolling along nicely. There is a fairly mature plan in place and we're working with the powers that be to provide a usable launch at the east end of Rowena. There will be a work party soon.

------------------

Beside the CGKA's opinion, here is my personal opinion, and save the b.s. as I've already received ton's of crap from everyone on this forum and some of the Lyle locals.

This topic comes up every year in the early season and the same argument gets had. If Lyle gets closed it's not going to be any one person, or one group of people that caused it to happen.

The fact of the matter is that the entire town and surrounding population uses that Sandbar for recreation, so it's not just the kiteboarders that are a risk to it. There is a mountain of issues that will have to be tackled to get Lyle access. It all boils down to the RR tracks. It's feasible that one day access would be approved via boat just like the Jetty Island beach up in Everett, WA.

People are going to kite there whether any of you like it or not. This forum is mostly a big group of friends and doesn't encompass 100% of kiters.

So what can you do to NOT be part of the problem?

- Be invisible, don't call attention to yourself or your vehicle by getting off the highway shoulder and park in a less conspicuous location.
- Encourage others not to park there either.
- Don't cross the highway, instead go under the highway.
- Visit the Lyle businesses.

Is the route along the river a total dropoff under the RR bridge? I can't remember. Just wondering if it would be improvable w/o blasting - which the RR may frown upon. Very Happy

It's a drop off, and the water gets to high for there to be a viable bridge built under.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but Lyle has always had access issues, even back in the windsurfing days where they used Klickitat river for speed trials. Asking USFS or BNSF for some sort of special access rights would only create more submission and lead to them shouting it down. IMO," if " the local authorities really had a problem with us down there they would simply walk the 1000 yrds down to the beach and site people on scene. The fact that know one has every been sited for crossing the RR tracks or disturbing the natural environment in past 10 years makes me think that they have more important concerns. Now $1000.00/30 days in jail trespassing sign seems to grab lots of attention. IMO this is for there own protection against liability if someone every were struck by a train. Like Kip, Matt, Forrest, stated just keep it on the low down, move quickly, park on the north side of HWY14(small parking lot), and maybe even walk under the bridge the long way around, (takes like 1 extra minute), and never post about it a pre/post sessions. I'm not actively involved with the CKA, but I heard the CKA is working hard to develop other sites, like Viento, Rowena, ect. Hopefully these developments will relieve pressure off of Lyle this summer.

I agree, keeping access to lyle as safe and as unclustered as possible is super important. I would really hate to lose this spot like we lost easy parking access to the place formerly known as the "secret spot".

i have seen trains grind to a halt there and it was because tourist types were standing on the tracks taking pictures. So it may help that if you see people just milling around on the tracks, to tell them to watch from a different location.
