Thanks blowhard! I still got that pic somewhere.

Where are you planning on riding? lake michigan and maybe some travel if i totally get " hooked " but I assume that is the normal progression

know any locals? I know of nobody except of the few I have met on the Chicago site telling me that they do lessons

ever thought about moving?
not at the present time, 2 kids that do not live with me

Someone mentioned demo days? Do they have one anywhere near the Chicago area?

I will probably buy new, I know it will be a little bit more, but there really is no selection of used equipment around my area.

thanks for all the great responses btw

Talk to Bob or Kris at www.kiteridersllc.com

they will hook you up... lessons, gear, beer, cheese-curds...whatever.. go to Wisco...the dairyland of the MidBest... Laughing

chicago's good too, but the Madison forum is way more active IMO.

My 2 cents are:
Southport Rigging (border of Kenosha and IL) might give you tips/contacts/lessons
Secondly Racine beach is a good place to learn that's unregulated unlike Chicago.
And last but not least if you get an 11m and that twin you'll only be able to ride a handful of times when the fronts move in (spring/fall). Being originally from Milwaukee my bread and butter kite was a 20m, the times have changed though so I would say first kite to get would be a 15 or 16 m bow or hybrid and then the 11.

ps this guy might also be a good contact www.kiteboardmilwaukee.com/ and a KILLER place to learn that's worth the drive is Bailey's Harbor in Door County

Just take a few lessons before you buy stuff, you might scare yourself so bad that you decide that this sport is not for you, or you will be soo stoked on it that you go support the local shops and buy gear!!!.. dude when i realized i loved kiting was when i launched from the hook and did a body drag down-winder..dude it was sick!!!!!!!!ahh the Columbia river water streaming out of my nostrils..nice gash in my kite from crashing it on the rocks..it was sooo sick!!

Don't be to quick to pass your experience on without looking at all the variables Mr Engineer. You got to kite everyday, so of course you grew out of it to quickly. Dude, it took me 4 months to learn to ride upwind cause I got to kite once a week and had all the wrong gear, plus it was all 2002 gear but the new 2003-2004 gear wasn't much better.

Anyway, he might be best on the Proof if he's a weekend warrior.
