Be sure an get a board that's wide enough to keep you planing. You'd be surprised what a difference it can make. |

Oh by the way guys, I'm in my 30's so I'm not that old. And besides, what does age got to do with how you kite. Look at Roby Nash. The guy is in his 50's and he's still the best windsurfer in the world in my book. And he is a hell of a lot better at kite boarding than I will ever be. So age don't mean anything. So yah, I'm in my 30's. So give up the old and fat guy thing. A little over weight yes. I ain't going to lie about that. But I'm working hard on that. |

If you want to ride in 10-20 wind the cabrinha contra 17m is a great kite and has grunt to get you going. ride a glide when 10mph and switch to a smaller board when it picks up. I ride my 16m crossbow and glide when its 10-15mph and switch to my smaller board 15-20mph. I weigh 230lbs and get a little over powered at 20mph so at your weight you should be fine. When its 18-22mph I can switch to my 12m but it takes some kite work till wind picks up a bit. Thats when the quick turning of smaller kites comes into play and you can generate power. I don't even bust out my 9m till its a steady 30mph+
I agree with the others, Demo some kites, they all handle differently.
I found the 17m contra performed better in light wind than my 16m crossbow but the crossbow turned quite abit faster. |

Once you are up and riding and start to throw down some tricks that actually involve the risk of you eating shit hard, you will soon realize that mid-thirties has got something to do with it. That realization usually comes the next morning and lasts for 4-5 days. I just turned 37 and their are a number of tricks that I pretty much decided, "man I would love to progress to that level, but my body couldn't handle the ground work needed to get there".
look at Gman, he can't even ride a board with straps anymore |

yeah, well crashing $1500 kites into the ground and shredding them will give you that youthful glow. |

I'm in your weight range, ~255lbs, and my normal set up for low SOCAL wind(13-15mph) is 17M Waroo and Jimmy Lewis FlightDeck (147x47).
The 17 with this board covers any conditions for me from 12-13 to a little over 25mph. I also have 13 which I use with a smaller boards 135x41 or 135x45 when it blows over 18 to 30-32mph.... above that I switch to a 10M Bularoo.
I think the board that you'll use with different kites will make whole lot of difference. I'm sure you'd fine on a surfboard and a 13M in 15mph winds.

Blowhard---you are 60?
Right on!
I have been watching a 62 year old guy charge the point in Seaside all winter-----surfing in double overhead barrels casually.
Impressive. |
