Epic day at the mountain! Finally. Super nice day, not too crowded for a sunday.
Was lucky to ride untracked past noon. Didn't see you guys-- was trying to keep ahead of the pack. Wink

Uhh... yeah... I think I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one...

The pow was awesome. The lines were not. The Heather line was frequently all the way down onto the runout (going down the little hill at the end of the runout) and we waited at least 30 minutes to get on HRM more than once. If the snow wasn't so damn awesome, we would have been out of there at noon. One of the hosts told me it was one of the busiest days of the year. The pow was awesome though....

Sweet, sweet powder... Laughing

Yeah, awesome powder. This mountain sports thing is new to me, so here is a question. I was to the mountain a few times, but I've newer seen a pow like today. Was that an exceptionally good powder today, something you get here only once in a while, or can you expect this goodness several times a year?

To get good light powder like today you need a few things:

1) Lots of precip
2) Cold weather conditions (10-20 Fahrenheit)
3) The snow to land on the mtn, rather than dumping as rain in Portland or elsewhere
4) Not enough wind to pack the snow, or blow it all away

This week we have a huge storm blowing over bringing cold temps and tons of precip. Its stayed cold enough during the day that the goodness should stay around for a few days. Once it warms up into the high 20's, low 30's, the snow starts to lose its flaky, crystaline structure and stick together more, making it heavy, wet snow you'll hear called "Cascade Concrete." We're pretty famous (the namesake) for it because its rarely super cold here like Colorado or Wyoming, so our snow is generally wetter, and thus heavier.

We usually get a few good dumps a year, but today was particularly good because its been unusually cold. Every year is different around the NW... you never really know what you're going to get. I think most of us had completely written off the season mid Feb when we had 20+ days of sun-baked crap snow and icy groomers every day.

Oh yes! Was enjoying some of the deep stuff on Sunday when my Slither Camera Sensors started going off. I dashed to the parking to find who was shooting, turns out it was Fox 12. They tried to get me to say that the roads we're dangerous and that Obama is a Marxist, but I resisted. Thumb's Up
