Sat Feb 21, 09 8:06 am kids 14 and under Big Air comp yesterday |
|

The 14 and under kids Big Air comp went off yesterday. They did amazing. Some of them were on borrowed equipment trading off Grom's slingshot kites between the 2 heats and then the finals. Grom's crazyfly board set up and 13m kite did the trick to win 2nd place for its rider. Here's some pics.

We didn't either. But officially we're in the Atlantic ocean here on the north coast of DR. South coast is in the Caribbean.

Mon Feb 23, 09 7:32 am Big Air was huge |
|
|
The big air went off big. There is a huge home field advantage to the locals who use the head high shore break to launch and then land in 1 inch of water or sometimes on the sand. Outside the shore break was rollers and nasty chop making for huge air or crazy take-offs by those of us who didn't know how to survive the shore break. And the local men can fly. Many of them were in the 30-40ft range with huge hang time. The crowd was cheering them on so we got one guy to do a double handle pass at 35 ft. Another did a handle pass into a board-off.
Big thanks to everyone who contributed- sponsors and donation. Dakine donated 20 xs and small harness so every junior competor got a harness. They were really excited! Great event and they beat their goal raising $11,000 for the local kid charities.

| I won the 3 hr couse race and a new Starkite which is made in DR. I donated it back to Kee who gave it out as the "Stoke Award" to the smallest kiter and our favorite, 9 yr old Yanni. Yanni and his brother are so excited! |

yeah the DR kids are just natural athletes where kiteboarding is concerned! West coasters need to make the trek at least once to Cabarete. It's a really unique place and well worth the effort!
Way to go Bolstad/Gormley crew! Looks like you guys had a blast and made a bunch of new friends:-)

Tue Feb 24, 09 3:55 pm Great Time in Cabarete |
|
|
We all ended up having a fantastic time. Put it on your calendars for next year as it will definitely happen again. We have over a 1000 photos and lots of video and I'm sure some of it will make the magazines.
The formers pros that were there said that the event was way more exciting than any event they had attended. Kids were out of this world in what they could do.

Wed Feb 25, 09 4:43 pm DR eye candy |

Here's a little more eye candy from DR. The rider is Starkites pro rider Jan Marco Riverias. Even in a light wind, he can rip up the shore break.
