Mon Jan 12, 09 5:37 am Need your old Mountain Bikes and Gear!!! THAnKS!! |
|
|
I'm not sure if I took the time to thank all of the people who have helped with the bike donations to the program that I teach.
As of last year we have 6 bikes donated and 4 that are really good for mountain biking post canon.
The district, Jeff B, helped us out with a stand, and some parts along with many kiters and windsurfers here in HR and Pdx.
The impact on these low income students has been really cool. They all know how to fix chains, adjust gears, and get a bike going again.
We always need your old Camel Backs, tubes, old shocks and any extra rims.
Thanks again for all of the help,
Ron

If you have old trainers that you don't use we need them to run a school spin class. Thanks for everything!
I can give you a tax write off on all donations.
Peace

The guy is trying to do some good - I am donating two of my older mountain bikes (besides the bikes were taking up too much room - now with the extra space I can get a fuse or maybe a surf board )

This is the real deal and these kids use these bikes to ride post canon. I'll post some pics of the kids working on the bikes.
I can give tax write offs to donations received.
If you have old bikes taking up space I will find them a home.
Every kid in the program is low income receiving reduced lunch from the feds. This means that there income is below poverty level.
Your donations are appreciated and used or I will not accept them.
Thanks again,
Ron

I apologize in advance, for coming across as a "downer", but I assume that you are responsible for teaching the "kids" good lifetime habits, along with the biking skills.
That would include (1) obtaining permission from the land owner before riding the bikes on private property, or altering the property to form jumps, bridges, elevated ride-ways through the trees, removal of living trees and shrubs. (2) having adequate health insurance, before performing high risk activities. (3) respect for pedestrians who are walking on the "bike trail".
A lot of us "adult" recreationalists who inhabit the Gorge, and who pay high prices for recreational equipment, and thereby, feel that we have, by default, inherited a special right to use the equipment anywhere we find "a really good place for it", without regard to private property statutes or courtesy to land owners....are setting a bad example for young people.
When you mentioned Post Canyon, I pictured the "kids" going in there with shovels, axes, chain saws and being tempted into following the example of a lot of our local recreationalists, whom they might run into there, setting up stuff, that might be construed by the land owners, as hazardous.
Hopefully, you have got all those bases covered, with adequate health insurance, permission slips, etc. and won't let them follow the bad examples of some of our locals.

Yep we do the following:
We use a curriculum called, "From A to Z by Bike", AMC Media Corp., www.amcmedia.net, 1995.
You can get these for free at the DMV for free. If you have kids this is a great book to go over with them.
The rules for riding during school are:
1. Bike check out: Each student must go on a ride with me to evaluate their ability to handle the bike, shift, brake etc.
2. Proof on insurance, all of my kids are on OHP.
3. Helmet with a good fit.
4. Gloves.
Before we ride at post we talk about riding etiquette:
1. up hill climbers have right of way
2. If you are in the lead and you pass you tell the person there are "2 more coming up!"
3. No splitting the trail. You must stay on the approved trial.
4. Don't go beyond your limits. They are encouraged to do the low elements if they want to, but we talk about how to fall etc.
5. Never ride in the mud.
If you think about it very few kids take advantage of the trails here in the gorge area. All of these kids are Hood River locals and they never rode post before! Now they love it and respect it!
There are many of you who have donated bikes they are all getting used. As I get more bikes students will be allowed to keep a bike after making their behavior and academic goals.
Thanks,
Ron

man
kitezilla, sounds like your spandex is on too tight. good for the apology up front
i've seen these kids riding up at post and they are all polite and just out to have some fun, on some old ghetto bikes----it is awesome.
thank goodness there are people out there like this guy to do something about keeping poor kids off the streets and drugs and not vandalizing your car.
because of him new trails will be built by these kids in years to come, and who knows one of them could go pro.
ron is coming over to pick up some stuff from me today.
thanks ron. hope the kids enjoy
All the stuff BUILT at post canyon is legal and permitted and even voted on by the community-----not to mention a whole lot of fun.

Thanks for the responses.
Ron,
Sounds like all your ducks are in a row. Nice to hear. If I had an extra bike, I would donate it.

| My ex and I had a youth white water kayaking program, with our old business, and we had mostly successes and very few failures. Most went on to be great people and gained a level of self respect and confidence that alot of "regular" kids never get today. I still keep in touch with many of them and love to here there stories of what they have done with themselves. Suport these programs they work and even if only one kid is better for it, its worth it!!!

We have a donated fsr stumper full susp that needs a new shock in back and has a broken front fork we can strip.
This bike will bring us to 4 hard core mountain bikes worthy of post canon. The rest are good bikes for cruising around HR.
Thanks very much people! I'll post some pics of the kids cruising the stuff donated. You will all receive thankyou letters from kids and a tax write off letter as well,
Thanks,
Ron and class
