Finally scored some sessions in my hometown (Fairhope, AL) over the holiday. Three different beaches all within about 20 minutes of my mom's house. I saw two windsurfers (one of which was an old buddy of mine) and no other kiteboarders. I was told that there may be three kiteboarders in the area. I was also told there is a 70 year old man that shreds on a poleboard that lives in Hood River during the summers and in Fairhope during the winters. I think he has it figured out because it was 65 - 75 degrees almost the entire time I was there. Water temp was 61, but with the sun it was perfect in a shorty.

Not many action pics but nice weather and sun!

Now just cold and rain until Baja on the 17th.

Looks like a great place. What the hell is that? A crab? Wouldn't want to step on it.

Those are barnacles that were on a stick that had floated up on the beach. And yes they would be a bitch to step on. I mainly remember scraping against them while swimming around pilings or a pier.

At the wildlife refuge there is a lake called Gator Lake, so yes there are gators. The gators I've seen in Mobile Bay are usually drunk from the waves though and look lost. I don't think you would ever have to worry about running into one kiteboarding. They usually stay close to the river mouths where the water stays calmer and the water fresher.

my good buddy used to live pretty close to there, in panama city fl. He said he saw kiters pretty often. More in the winter I guess.

He liked the weather and the beaches down there, but thought there weren't enough NPR listeners or micro-brews, so he relocated to obama country. Looks pretty good to me, though.

That may have been why I moved to Portland 9 years ago :O)
