I can't even begin to imagine how painful this must be for everyone involved. Or how much a evac from La Paz to OHSU must cost. If there is anything needed let us know.
It may be to soon to ask, but I am curious how this happened, and if she was a beginner or a seasoned veteran. I figured Ricci at the FKA forum would be all over it, but I saw nothing posted there.
Once Again positive vibes going out to Christina and her family.
Lets hope they can fix her up.

Best wishes for the Kiter and family.
My neighbor runs a med-evac out of the N.Bend airport
with twins,helicopters and a Lear ,
full time nurse and Doctor on staff.
My other neighbor got a bad tummy ache from some MX. food in Los Cabos
a couple years ago
He called for his Med-Evac plan which he is a member ($500 a year? I think),
Still it was $25K from Cabo (they are very good friends as well).
Another neighbor was vacationing in Playa del Carmen and got t-boned by a jetski
major broken back
called for Med-Evac a Dr. And nurse was dispatched (as none was on hand in MX.)
$75K.
A very good friend of mine passed in MX. this year from a viral infection in his lungs(slight cough when he left)
no one gave him antibiotics this was after they transfered him to Merida for "better" help.
Being in the 3rd world is a very risky business
Go prepared |

Hello Forum.
Im on the outskirts of this wonderful community as I am new to kiting, so I hardly feel worthy to post on this sad loss to those close to her, but I know you all vicariously through the forum, and thought I would. It is an amazing network of awesome people living their lives and being willing to chase wind and waves to live to the fullest! In spite of the dangers, that I am sure we all take for granted sometimes.
I am sure we are alike in so many ways as we have this quest for natures playgrounds. We see spirituality in all we do and it penetrates our entire beings on the tops of mountains, or the powerful swell of the ocean and the euphoric exhilerated peace we get in these experiences. We are most alive when we are doing what we love. We see and feel things that not everyone ever gets the opportunity to experience in the sports that we do. It is amazing to live and we are graced with amazing lives. There is a God, I am sure of it, and I am sure He is present with Christina.
My thoughts and prayes go to all those close to her.

Very sorry to hear about Christina. Everybody think good thoughts and somebody post something if there is anything the kiting community can do to help her family out... _________________ Marina

Good advice re: med-evac charges. My brothers kid was injured falling off a wall in the caribbean a few years ago. It was $34k to air ambulance him to Miami. His insurance ended up covering it, but it took almost a year of wrangling. In the meantime, he had to put it on his credit card. I dont know about you guys, but I dont have $34k worth of plastic. If you travel abroad, be damn sure of what youre covered for and what youre not!!!!
Re: The La Paz doctor's best/worst case scenarios, I'd say he got it backward. Living as a quadriplegic sounds like about the WORST thing I can imagine. I'd much rather somebody pulled my plug.
Either way, horrible horrible experience for the family. Best wishes to them all. |

When I lived in Cabarete DR for three years, I had emergency traveler's insurance through Lloyds and basic emergency insurance through Blue Cross in the US to get my butt back home and treated in case anything happened. third world countries are great to visit but for medical, you definitely need to know the right people to get good treatment and the bucks to pay cash for it. The insurance is not that expensive and definitely worth the peace of mind...... _________________ Marina

Lots of people have this outlook and I can understand the thought process that causes it, but in reality it is very untrue. I hope that she does pull through and does survive this to deal with the issues that quadriplegics have to. I hope she gets to see her kids graduate high school or college, watch her kids get married and have children of there own and know her grandchildren. This is the happiness that quadriplegics can experience. It is small minded to think that she will never know the smile that life alone can bring, very small minded. Think of her kids, they will love her quadriplegic or not.
That being said, my best goes to her family and wish all a very safe season.
Just for the sake of understanding my standpoint on this; I have a friend who became a para out in CO riding at Breck in 2002 and a cousin who is a para from a swimming/diving accident in NJ. They are both great people and looking back I am very happy they are still here.
Thanks,
Eric |

To those who knew and loved Christina: she has died. She was
diagnosed with irreversible brain death this morning at OHSU. Her
body is being kept alive on the ventillator because she has always
wanted to donate her organs. Her final gift to the world will be
giving life to many other people. Her spirit will live on. |
