Aloha KG,

Some good advice above. I have used my 9m mostly, and my 7m and 11m once (with my skim) since Tuesday and I have kited everyday. Your twin tip would be fine but you can get a cheap surfboard at a pawn shop (West Maui Pawn in Lahaina) and sell it back when you are done. Craigslist here has many inexpensive boards too. If you want to rent a kitesurfboard ($20/day) you can go to Second Wind in Kahalui right near the beach in Kanaha. I also like to wear a shorty 3mil suit and a long sleeve rash guard for us pasty NWs. Just a little extra warmth and flotation for those long swims Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Waves in Kanaha, predicted to be small this next week, and like Scott said it is a good place for beginners. More challenging is going out at Lanes, with a shallow reef put in and flukey wind on the beach but good waves even with a smaller swell when you get out. You will need booties here but I take them off once I am out in the surf. The downwinder from there to Kanaha is fun but there are definitely some sucker places if you are too close to the beach.

For flat water or when the north shore is not happening you can go to Kihei. Shallow, windy, and no waves but really fun on a skim or strapless surfboard.

No matter, you will be stoked. PM me if you want some more specific info. I will be here for another 10days Thumb's Up

Im heading to Maui next week for some fun in the sun. This is my first trip there and Im wondering where the closest kite area is to Kaanapali beach? Also what kind of equiptment should I bring. Can I get by with a 9m and 11m (160lbs)? Do I need to bring my wetsuit? Will I get by with only one board size?(134 sol) or should I bring my big board as well? Will they be charging extra for my Golf deceiver bag? Where can you get the cheapest rental car? Any help is appreciated.

Kitebeach is the safe bet. almost always. You can kite there from 11 am until sundown. I've tried beaches closer to your spot...but ended up with cuts and bruises...not small ones.

At 160 lb normally you would get away with 9 - 7 or 6 set up, but it's been light lately. Actually on Oahu, it's been dead so that means about 20 mph on Maui.

In terms of boards...bring whatever you have..if it is a surfboard..if it is a big TT, usually you would not need it...but no need for wetsuit. I have a 1- 2 mm, shortie that I use maybe once a year.

Car rentals, well just check it out the different rentals places online. If you're staying for a longer time, there are other options...

I see lanes has been mentioned...I don't know your level, but just really be careful there...not to be taken too lightly..absolute must with booties there...

The deceiver bag, will normally work, but they have started to recognize them..it just depends a lot on the airline and the person at the desk.... Give it a shot.

well put genek,
winter in maui can have a day or days, a week or somtimes even a month of no wind if your 1 week trip to maui falls in that time your s.o.l.
But all in all this has got to be the most consistantly windy place in the u.s. year round

Its so windy here the rest of the year, 7m is my regular size kite.
9m for when its light, dont even use 12m or bigger. (170lbs)

Winter usually we have waves and lighter winds like 9-10m with a few 12m days
Summers are mostly blistering winds 5-7m and a hand full of smooth 9-12m days

No need for wetsuit, bring reef walkers if you want to charge lanes, lots of sunscreen, all your kites (except the big ones) rent a surfboard or standupboard if there is no wind cause there is alot to do in maui and kiting is just one of em.

check windguru.com for forcast they are pretty on it, make sure and double the windspeeds as a east 15knt forcast is usually 25-30knt session at hookipa to kitebeach

feel free to stop by the naish store in kahului on the hana hwy on your way to kitebeach and say Aloha
