Gman was def. charging yesterday! He got another super fun session with TwinFin, Chris Berman & I from Viento->Cascade locks in the afternoon. It was ROCKING for Oct. 22!

Not as 'rocking' as the same downwinder that Pepi did-- A 14m on a 7' surfboard !! Unbelievable gusting through stevenson-- we were all fully depowered on 7m's by the end-- and low and behold Natedogg rolls in right behind us on a 10 and Pepi on a 14! Shocked

maybe its time we stop talking about BV. Let the kooks play at the rooster beach...

Haha, too late! Plus we can already see all the cool kids up there when we are at Rooster. You can't hide from kooks. Razz

Nice! Don't Pepi and Nate know to rig for the real wind instead of the light fluffy stuff at the beginning? Props for making it though!

Yeah...totally unintentional downwinder. We intended on just sticking around at Viento, but when the wind turned so SE that I would have had to self rescue to get back into the launch (by now about a half mile away) I decided to just drift on the surfboard back out to the wind line, relaunch, and chase the other guys down to Cascade Locks.

I guess the logic going through my head at the time was, "Well...a downwinder is definitely better than a self rescue. And hey, it it's dieing here, it should be dieing at Stevenson, too?"

WRONG. I was lit up like a roman candle, going mach 5 strapless on a 6'0 quad and soo stoked to see KraemDog, JP, Chris and Gman still at the Locks to catch my kite AND give a ride back to the Viento launch. Thanks again guys...

I'll let Pepi recount his 14m experience...

Yea, I went out at Viento, took two tacks and came in before I was stuck in the same position. That shit sucked, I guess dawn patrol is required at Viento too.

I would have wept and kissed the beach at Cascade Locks, but it had duck poop all over it and Nate would had never let me live my pussy-ness down since he just did the same downwinder riding strapless.

I'd like to take more credit for our stupidity, but it was just a case of basic logic in realizing the futility of swimming hopelessly against both wind and river current. After seeing Nate bail downwind I thought "do I want to take a long walk back to Viento on the highway, or do I want to do a downwinder I'll never forget".

The ride was super fun all the way down to about a mile past HomeValley when I caught up with Nate. I was so stoked to see Nate that I decided to then have some fun and start slashing some of the swell that miraculously began to appear out of nowhere. But, I soon realized that the big swell came as a result of the bigger wind of which I had been letting pull me at mach speed down wind, and when I tried to edge against the kite to hit some swell, I was immediately launched off my feet into a double mach speed semi airborn downwind run. This was beginning to make the Blowout look like a kitten run.

From that point on, things got really windy and scary, and then quickly more windy and more scary. I was shitting myself trying to figure out how we were going to land at Cascade Locks. Was I going to totally ditch the kite, or was I going to get accidentally launched over the marina breakwater, which way was I going to die?

Needless to say, we made it into the nice and protective wind shadow above Cascade Locks and dropped in safely with help and shuttle service from the PDX boyz.

It was definitely a downwinder I will never forget.

Pepi
