Giant, chunky, ugly storm surf happens on a regular basis all winter long up here. It is nothing out of the ordinary!!! Clean, lined up cordorary swell on the other hand is an event that is special and occurs on a far less regular basis. For example, last years Nelscott contest almost never happened and not because of lack of size. It was ricktor huge all last winter, but was ugly storm surf with strong south to west winds. Forse did eventually run the contest after the original time window expired, and it was done in substandard conditions when compared to the perfection scale that most veteran big-wave surfers use.
In other words, don't get to excited when National Weather Service and WAM models are calling for 15' plus surf around here when we are in a progressive weather pattern with storm fronts.

Yup usually a mess
I was thinking that there could be a Nelscot in the fall pattern
some of this wind is frontal?
and if it takes big swell to make it happen
perhaps?
My big swell plan usually involes staying inside and riding
REFORM (unless surfable)
But I graduated from the Whiskey Run Reform School
and know how go downwind

Eli,
land sailors?
When I was in the Emerald Valley Soaring club
the club would tow the 2 place over to the Alvord
and soar off the ridge and thermal soar.
Do you ever see sailplanes over there?

I've never been there, I'm going tomorrow for a couple days...I'm taking a kite buggy and some high aspect foils called 'yakuza'...I can ride over 70mph on the lake beds...and i hear there are killer milk shakes in burns, or fields.
I fly paragliders, I don't know if I will there...
sail planes sound sick...thermals and ridges...awesome...!
do you fly the sailplanes...I see them near the north planes...
and if you google earth it...they have planes on the lake bed. are those for towing the sail planes??

I took my first lessons at N.Plains
turns out my daughters boyfriends(20 yrs. later) uncle was my tow pilot
I sold my glider 20 yrs. ago, a Centrair Pegusus 45-1 glide ratio
It's very trippy to be a winglength away from the rocks and see hikers
and be so quiet they don't know your there.
Soaring is very popular there,
people from Nevada and California use it a lot
many use a winch to tow ,
big V8's and a mile of cable ,
like being shot out of a cannon

The alvord is soo cool. I was there once when all the land sailors invaded, the had a "big ugly yach" race. They were all really cool and got sponsored by full sail which basically meant everyone drank a bunch of beer and cruised around the desert.
They had some ships with little wings for sails, they got goin like 80. It was pretty sick. Plus, the alvord still has some of THE best hot springs in the state.
have fun out there!!
