He has kind of a tough situation taking care of the desert rat/camper-do-it-ourself-ers like us, and making sure the paying campo guests are getting their $1600/week out of it. It's kind of a hard thing to deal with once the campo and desert rats start mixing.
If I ever go back, I'd just pay to stay at the campo, and fly down from San Diego. Those guys had it so freaking GOOD for the price... |
You can't expect to get any kind of support for paying $6/day. That fee is camping fee not resort support fee. The customers who pay $1600/week might get a ride back to the camp site when you get to shore but that is all they get. I stayed at Solo few years ago and they made it very clear, don't expect them to come get you and start swimming. The van was waiting for all of us who swam in and made it in by the chili bowl. They do have a jet ski but I guess they only use it in extreme emergency, I never saw it anywhere near the water the whole time I was there. _________________ Sonny

"That fee is camping fee not resort support fee."
That's what I thought too, but I was not camping there. We were staying in San Quintin, but with the lack of wind there, we made two "day trips" to San Carlos. We drove down there from San Quintin and back in the same day, and he still charged us. So, we paid him $15 a day ($5 per person) to drive up, kite for a few hours, and leave.
The fee is nominal, but it's the principle of the thing. What did I pay for? The right to use the ocean?
Like I said, if he came out and launched and landed us, I would have paid more than $5 per person for that service.
Anyone who has kited there knows the launches and landings are tough. If you don't have an extra person, it's damn near impossible. |

| the fee is to use private property. I am not sure what the percentages are but my understanding is that the money goes back to the land owners(hedo) |

How much would you charge if you owned that land? Would you allow someone to use it for free? _________________ Sonny

Also, Rodney is a windsurfer not a kiter. I'm not a big fan of non-kiter helping me with my kites. _________________ Sonny

| I think it's hard for Americans to understand the idea of someone owning the beach. |

Mexicans in general And in Baja in paticular have an acute
understanding of OWNERSHIP
Even if they don't own it
1000's of years of others owning everything
would make anyone want some rent!
the fight to divy up the vast tracts in Baja (ejidos)
is a genetic link to the land |

I remember him telling us how he wants Red Bull to sponsor a mountain board race from the paved road all the way to San Carlos using foil kites. Anyone that's been down there knows how ridiculous it sounds to have people race over 40 miles of Baja desert with hills/mesas, holes, arroyos, cactus, etc. and no wind in spots. It does sound awesome in principle and the carnage would certainly attract viewers but we'd prob want to at least give the riders a fighting chance. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC
