| Dude, why don't we buy a lawn mower of CL, take the engine out, and make one of those for the PDX crew. Sick airport skim sessions......

Anyway, to Git-r-done. I'm discussing the general concept of having a winch here.

Umm, so who in the PDX area is interested in hooking one up? With a solid group of people it wouldn't cost much and we could have some serious fun on the no wind days. More riding in the shoulder seasons and after work. Jake, Chooch, anyone else? It was a lot of fun last Sat even with cold heavy rain. |
I would def. throw chunk of cash down for that....we should get a group of buyers togeather and work something out over a few beers

I wasn't really interested in buiding one for myself. Just wondered how hard it would be, and it's not too bad at all. Lots of guys have built them on youtube. Even some pretty clean ones. Biggest thing would be figuring out what you want for a clutch. I assume the real Grinch Winch uses a centrifugal clutch, but there are other ways to make it work. Even a belt like scooter with a variable tensioner..? First need to find a decent motor with a horizontal crankshaft. Everything else, I'd order from here - http://www.mcmaster.com/
Oh yeah, how fast would you want it to go? Saw the GW will do ~25ish.

I don't know about plopping 2k plus on one when we can probably make one for about $300 tops.
I'm serious about building one if other people are. I can get steel stock below wholesale. Seems like these guys have done much of the work already in terms of how to build it. http://winchskating.com/forums/
With a lawn mower engine..$50 and a centrifugal clutch- $40 your most of the way there.

That one's nice in being made out of Al! Who wants to TIG it?
Though even steel has gone up crazy amounts in the past couple years, I think the most expensive thing is going to be the line. 1/8" or 3/16" AmSteel gonna cut it?

Well, the Grinch isn't perfect either and some improvements could be made. Seems like the main pieces are fairly standard components so I doubt building a solid one is impossible.
Let's stay on track here and figure out who's interested. We can debate how to get one after we have a core group of ppl.
Jake and Adam, you guys interested if it's affordable?

I'd be interested in helping assemble if you guys wanted any help, but probably not as far as buying (or putting money towards). Sorry, just not my kind of thing.

Amsteel 1/8" 2100 pounds average strength. .24 / foot
Amsteel 3/16" 5400 pounds average strength .51 / foot
1/8" would be more than strong enough. There might be a problem with it "digging in", that is the line might bury itself in the spool. It wouldn't be a risk while riding, but might make pulling the line out difficult. No way of knowing till you try it.

Do it right with a self contained hydrostatic transmission:
http://hydraulics.eaton.com/products/trans_light_duty.htm
model 11 should be the ticket. Probably need 10 hp, a clutch
to dis-engage the spool and some pillow blocks. Put a fan
on the engine side to blow air on the trans. Might need an
external cooler but the duty cycle doesn't seem too bad.
Start with tow speed and then use spool diameter to get
into the power range for the enginr . Probably around 3000
(guessing) rpm for your typical B&S.
Spike, we need a Winch Formula.

| That's just going to make it more expensive... Hydrostatic trans stuff is cool, but obviously not necessary for this type of winch. I'd be curious to see how much the thing bogs down anyway.

| Sure you could build it with all manner of fancy crap butmist people on the forum are using a 7-8 up motor and a simple centrifugal clutch that sells for around $35. I'm thinking that total cost would be around $500 when it's said and done. I made a complete part list but don't want to rye it out here. The biggest cost is the motor $125 and the line $300. I can get steel crazy cheap.
