Aloha, I am moving from Maui to Portland in Oct. Does anyone kiteboard IN Portland or is it just the Hood area? Mahalo.

There are a few spots just outside portland. One is Sauvies Island and it shuts down at the end of the summer, the other big spot is Rooster Rock and it blows fall and spring. Your best bet for riding this winter will be at the coast (1-2 hours depending on the spots) during some tasty South blowing systems.

Welcome!

There is some great riding both West and East of Portland. You can definately make it easier to kite by choosing your location with kiteboarding in mind. What part of town will you be working in?

So if I live in the city...and choose to be car-free...and willing to walk/use public transpo will I be able to kite without renting a car?

Nah. Expect at least a half hour drive to go kiting. You're spoiled in Maui. Living in Portland you'll typically drive 30min to 1.5 hours to go kiting depending on where in the Gorge or coast you're going to. Still, there's some great kiting to be had around here. Welcome to Oregon!

Check out

http://www.nwkite.com/guides/

for info on local spots...need a car for sure in PDX.

You could probably live in Hood River and kite without a car.

When the heavy winter easterlies kick in you should get some days at the airport spot (off of marine drive.) Its really the only kiting spot in Portland, only goes a few days a year ... . Good skate kiting too Thumb's Up
