You mentioned the "dark side" - funny, as a long time windsurfer I still dig ripping it up at The Wall on nuking days, and I had some scary close calls over the years. Yet the fear in kiting is a different animal entirely - lots more fear! In a way - it defines part of why I'm enjoying learning kiting so much. One has to keep a cool head constantly, or try anyway. The kite is always in play. |
I wonder, is any of your fear promoted by the ideas some members of the windsurf community like to propagate about kiteboarding?
If so, it would be interested to hear your thoughts on this in the future after you become proficient in kiteboarding. |

I like to watch people when I'm out kiting and it's those without fear that scare me the most.
I guess respect is another word to think about when launching a kite.
On the coast I feel the same way about my board. Anytime my ass hit's the water I think about the 14 foot tiger shark that I saw at Hookipa in 96.
I make it a point to try really hard to never lose my board in the ocean. So far so good knock on wood.
Fear plus good judgment with a dash of humility and good equipment equals fun times. _________________ Hey, I'm being hahahahahrassed! |

| Riding boots in the ocean is actually really fun, easy, and you never loose your board. I suppose it could be pretty dangerous if you get wrapped up in your lines, but that never happens right!? |

Fear is a great thing.
It keeps you "safe minded" about your kite and abilities.
The thing I love most about fear is when it turns into: "Oh my kunundrums! I actually landed that badboy!" _________________ (>====<|> ---< |

Naw, my fear simply comes from having a BIG flying thing at the end of a line that can cause hurt if one does not pay attention. I really don't get the sibling rivalry between the two pursuits. Bummer ya have a perception that some WS try and "propagate" anything. I know many boardheads that have switched over, and still windsurf when we see liquid smoke. I know of the ol KB misconceptions your referring to (razor lines -whatever), but that's not it here. This has everything to do with pushing my limits as a beginner, and probably will do that for the life of the sport.
Yea, I occasionally hear a few territorial complaints - but I hear it from both sides. Most WS I know think kiting rocks. The river is huge and we all share a desire for access! CGWA and CGKA should work together as much as possible, but that is for another thread eh? |

Great attitude! Welcome to the sport!
I have some windsurfing buddies in California who rip in the waves and are really fun to ride with. They often egg me on to catch the same wave as them and we can go down the line together smacking the lip. It's all about having a good attitude and remembering why we're out there. As long as we're all having fun and sharing the space it's all good. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

I've never ridden boots other than on a wakeboard. I like that super connected feel but it sounds like chaos if you get it wrong on a wave and get put on spin cycle. How easy is it to get in an out of them when you are floating?
I'd like to try them out but I've been knocked sensless wakeboarding a couple times from catching an edge and smacking the water at mach 10. I have bad visions of being attached to my kite unconsious. _________________ Seamonkey |
