Way OT, but this weekend I loaded up on that John Wayne 45spf sunscreen and still came home cooked. I often go out with no spf. I had a ws'ing friend who died a few years ago from skin (and other) cancer partially picked up from a decade in the Gorge.
I often see folks with the white zinc nose, I've been too vain for that, doesn't match my boardshorts.
Survey... what's everyone doing.
Powerful Weekend! Many Thanks to Tonia, Garrett and all. Lets' go 2009!

got some spf45 I use every time, still I tan like crazy though.
Are sunburns what gives you cancer or does only getting tan just slow the process down? If so I'd have to get some of that zinc stuff as well.

SPF 50...use it every time (if not twice). Sure, zinc doesn't look that cool, but neither does having skin cancer. And yes, that is what you will get if you never use sunblock.

I actually was really impressed with that sunscreen this weekend. I put it on twice during the day and it seemed to work well. I have to figure out how to buy it in the quart size like they had at the event
My fav suncreen is Sol - bluewater Pepi sells it at 2nd wind. It's made up in Seattle. I have been using it for the past two summers and it rocks.
The key to not getting fried is to put the suncreen on 30-45 mins before you go out side. That way it absorbs properly. Dont forget to reapply at least once during the day too. I also try to wear a hat as much as I can during the day too.

Sunscreen is good but hats are better IMO... or using both is best.
Even if I use sunscreen I still get that "fried" feeling after being in the sun all day unless I wear a hat for at least part of it. Plus I think kiting with hats is cool, but maybe I am just a kook.

Helmut with (neck snapping) brim - can't have everything
Sunscreen a must - every session!
My dad's doc says your lips are high risk - fuck never put on lipscreen - guess I have add that to the arsenal
That John Wayne stuff is thick - probably the best - Banana Boat 50 works

not just b/c it looks too cool, but honestly, you can tell if any has come off.. you always know what is covered and what is not. nose and lips for sure! problem with the zinka on the lips is when you go to drink you PBR it doesn't taste the same.

Are sunburns what gives you cancer or does only getting tan just slow the process down? If so I'd have to get some of that zinc stuff as well. | Generally there are two types of skin cancer. One type is relatively trivial (squamous and basal cell carcinomas). This type is related to the amount of time of sun exposure. Usually it takes a lot of time to develop this type of tumor, so you just try to remember it when you select your first walker
Second type, melanoma, is very serious. This is one of most aggressive malignancies we know. It is related to the times you get sunburn, a very bad setup for us here in NW. Any brown lesion that is growing, changing color, has irregular borders, has irregular coloration, or is bleeding should be examined by a doctor.
Places that commonly are forgotten to be protected are ears and lower lip. Hat is an excellent solution, and it also protect your scalp from sun exposure. Hair doesn’t provide adequate sun protection!
Also it is worth to remember that clouds do not block UV radiation. You can get sunburn on a totally overcast day.

In addition to sunscreen, I always take Vitamin E in the morning. I've read that it can really help a lot. I always burn pretty easy, but never when I take the "E"... I started doing that when I lived in Hawaii, and had my kids take it too. It really does seem to help.

Just thought I would bring Kip's older post on sunscreen back to life with some new-to-me info.....which is worth thinking on during the height of summer.....
http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=5541
My sister is in the health field (pediatrics) and felt the need to address my childish treatment of sunscreen use. I told her that I mostly live in a rubber suit with a hood and she sent the above link with a short note........ "so that you can avoid someone going chop-chop on your face later"
I'm sort of with Gman on this one and use a helmet with a brim. I always kite with the Sweet helmet (bought in HR a while back) and it was part of my gear stash anyway so it double duties now for year-around water duty It keeps quite a bit of sun from reaching my face, but gives quite the head torque when getting an ass beating sometimes. The color I chose sort of has tin-foil hat properties
I gots a tube of zinc now too.
(OT on a OT) Come on down to Pistol people!...it's sunny, it's nuking this week like everywhere else, and the grocery store in Gold Beach has sunscreen...grab some on the way through. Plus we could use some company down here......just want to share the love after reading all the sandbar crowd posts.....bring your mini kites

Anything over SPF 30 is marketing BS don't pay more for it. It is the same as 30. Netrogena makes some good, albeit pricey stuff.
