Sunscreen is a must every session but more importantly you should reapply every 2 hours or so out in the sun, more often if on the water. I have a pfd with a nice big chest pocket that I keep a tube of Neutrogena spf 45 in.
In addition, be sure to keep an eye on any precancerous growths and get them checked out early.

I use NO AD 15 every time I go out, no problems. For those of you fair skin, go with the 30. Buy it by the quart at Bi-mart and those bastards at Wal Mart.

**Beware reaction to sunscreens.**
Basically a chemical burn doesn't look or feel that different than a sunburn. If you felt sunburned despite loading up, it's possible you are reacting to whatever you put on (this was my experience). Almost every sunscreen out there has avobenzone or oxybenzone. I'm fairly sure I react to them both.
Physical blockers (zinc and titanium) appear to be the least problematic from a skin reaction standpoint, but depending on how the material is micronized/encapsulated it can obviously be an eye irritant as well. Australian product "blue lizard" doesn't irritate, but the shit feels like sandpaper in the eyes - avoid!
I use Banana Boat Kids Tear-Free 50 and it works (yellow bottle, pink cap). Slather it on thick, it won't run in your eyes and it probably won't burn you. It has few complex chemicals to react to (especially "avo/oxy benzone complexes - variants of Parson 1789). Do note that they have a product with really similar packaging, called "Avo Triplex" which has the bad stuff.

This past weekend in the Gorge my skin was very very happy, and so were my eyes that usually get blood red burned. But there's no question that I look ridiculous.
Just to repeat what started this two years ago. In the '90s my very good friend Lee Warner contracted skin cancer after 15 years of windsurfing. Had to have his ear cut off, and the melanoma went away. But 4 years later he got pancreatic cancer. Ticket out.
I guess the most effective prevention would be that space mask guy I saw down there.

I am pretty sure sunscreen expires too! Make sure it is not to old! I have been a river guide for 18 years and have tested many brands. I swear by the new neutrogena stuff that was posted earlier but I like the non sport version in the beige bottle. 80 proof! Ive heard that there is no such thing as sunblock over 45 but that is a crock! It works take it from someone who spends 12 hours a day in the sun! imo

I prefer No-Ad Sport and Coppertone Sport, but pretty much anything that says waterproof or sport stays on pretty well in the water. And sunblocking lip balm (my favorite is Blistex).
The FDA considers SPF 15 a total sun block, and they don't regulate anything higher than that. So SPF 30 probably contains twice the sun blocking agent as SPF 15.
For tropical riding, I add sunglasses and a Patagonia surf hat (and a long-sleeved rash guard):

He so pale.
Has something to do with the way he throws down at the event site.
or maybe with the mask. one of the many benefits the mask can give.
marybeth looks good with or without the mask.
