So despite the grim forecast and actuals, I went out to SI last night to teach a friend how to fly a trainer kite. When we arrived there was another regular kiter there that I won't name because he was embarrassed to be found out at the island on a day that so obviously wasn't going to work.
When we got there it was blowing about 4-5mph from the SOUTH. The river looked like glass. The steam stacks at St.Helens were vertical. Grim.
After about 15 minutes, I noticed that the steam stacks were laid flat out in the typical strong pm NW pattern. I decided to pump up my 15M just in case. What the hell, right?
5 minutes later you could see a fatty wind line way down river. The other kiter started pumping up a 14M. 10 minutes later, at about 7pm, my empty kite bag was blowing down the beach. We were both lit, and we had the river all to ourselves. Total white caps across the river and one of the best sessions in several weeks. There was a brief lull about 40 minutes later and I loaned the other kiter my 15M. The wind came back up and he was overpowered on the 15M.
We had to leave at 8pm to meet a friend and at 8pm it was blowing a consistent upper teens. Except for the fact that it had been a nice hot day in town as the only potential good sign, all other forecasts said it was going to be shit.
If you don't go, you won't know (unless someone tells you about it later). _________________ Lets FLY |

It was me. It was a really hot day and my wife wanted to get out of the house to cool down. What better place than SI. We were litterally packing up to take off when the wind line came marching down the river. Nothing like a surpirse session when your half in the bag.
Props to my wife for being cool about sticking around 2 hours longer than she wanted to. |

Hey Drew I will be passing through Portland on Tuesday. I plan on hanging out at SI for the day so I expect you to show up for a few cold ones.
