PostMon May 19, 08 8:39 am    another kite question Reply with quote

i have a kite question for the nwcrew. i have been reading posts and have gotten good info, but i will ask anyhow. i have flown slingshot for the last few years and recently departed with my diesel 15. i am looking to replace that kite with a newer kite. my low wind kite is a speed2 19m which is great. so being on the east coast up here in maine the summer wind is on the light side. which would fill that gap better the rev 13 or maybe the t3 14. thanks for any input.

What would you say the average wind is? What size board are you on? And how much do you weigh?

It's probably easier to determine with those in mind.

I am 190 pounds and my board is 137. For 15 to 25 knot winds I ride my 11M bow kite. I feel its absolutely ideal for those conditions.

Not that you couldn't ride it, but the T2/3 14m is kind of big for that wind range. If you were going to try to get out in 15mph and you didn't have the 19m, then yeah, the T2/3 would probably be the kite. But with you needing something up at 20-25ish, I'd go with the REV 13 (will fly more like the Diesel you're used to also). An 11m would even work at 25, but you'll probably be a bit underpowered at 20.

I heard that the REv 14 is a little less friendly in the low end than the TD II or III?

and I fly the td II in 20 plus with a 136 board and I love it! It's bit less fun than the 11, but if it's holey I like the power and would rather be over powered on my 14 than having to work the hell out of my 11 on a big or small board.

The 14 flys well in over powered gusty conditions like 16 to 26mph. If it average of 25 it's too much but doable.

thanks for all the great info. i knew the west coast crew could help me out. it is very hard for me to demo anything due to location. it sounds like i can't go wrong with either the turbo or the rev. does the t2 differ that much from the t3? of course now i am torn between the two. i like to do more freeride stuff than try and land complicated tricks. thanks again everyone. i might keep my eye on that t2 14 in the classifieds.

bulae, not that it matters, but there is no REV 14... Only a 13 and 15. The REVs in general need some speed to generate power (so they won't have the low end of a traditional bow kite), but that doesn't mean they won't work in lighter conditions.

alawhead, I realize that you said it's hard to demo kites where you're located, but I'd really consider riding a kite in 2:1 if you haven't already... It's a completely different feel (bar pressure wise) that some like, but unfortunately, I can't deal with coming from FUELs (I'm on REVs now). If you go with the T2 or 3, I'd consider an 11 for the wind you mentioned. Not that the 14 wouldn't work, but it's going to have a lot more power than you would think. Definately comparable low end to the Machine 17.5. In the REVs, the 13 will easily power up to what your old Diesel 15 would, but you'd have much more range on top. And as I mentioned earlier, would feel pretty similar.

As far as the main differences between the T2 and T3... The T3 has smaller more compact bridles (similar to the REVs), below the bar safety (same as the REV), and a newer bar which is also convertible from 2:1 and 1:1 (will decrease bar pressure, turning speed, and overall amount of shut-off on the kite).

But you need a T2/3 14, not a Rhino 16m... Wink
