The fam is heading to Maui in February. Last year we used Alaska Airline and like most other people had no problem taking our gear for the regular luggage fees- Everything was under 50 lbs.
The cheap United tickets, about $200 less for the 4 of us are sounding pretty sweet. BUT what's their luggage policy like. I see that it's $100 for kite board gear but do they stick to that if you're within the regular baggage restrictions? Does it help if you do curb side check in?
Thanks for any and all in put! |

I fly United quite a bit and this works for me:
Put your kites, wetsuit, bar and harness in regular looking suitcases instead of a board or golf style bag. Get a sleeve type bag for the twin tip and take off the fins and footstraps. Put those things in with the kites. Refer to the board as a skim board. Skim boards are free. Or call it your snowboard and tell them you are going to Colorado straight from Hawaii.
Curb side check in does help and I've never been charged out there. Tip about $10.00 per bag. If you only have a golf style bag for your gear then definately do curb side check and get there early.
If you're taking a surf board you will have to pay extra for it. Best bet is to rent or buy a board in Maui.

Bring everything but the board. You can rent one on island.
All your stuff in a normal suitcase is the right idea.
Alaska is $20 per suitcase under 50lbs (first two per person). Compare that with United.
Alaska is DIRECT by the way. Worth every penny. _________________ --------------------------------

Yup works like a charm ! Bag for kites and such , separate enclosed bag for the stripped down board , snowboard ha ha ,
I flew to StLucia with Air Canada and they had an issue with what to do until , I said it's like a snowboard ....... Oh , Ok thats on our list of acceptable items . What ? To an island in the caribe , taking a snowboard and there's no question but Kiteboard was listed as an extra charge !? Whatever
Have a great time

Dont fly united, they are dirty cheap basterds like most the main line us air carriers. Stick with Alaska, they are consistant and fair. Just paid $50 bucks going to Maui for my 95 pound 4 board, 3 kite quiver. Support the airlines that are fair and these charges will level, go with whoever offers what appears to be a cheaper fair and we all will suffer! |

We use United to go to Maui a good bit. We just pay the $25 per bag, make sure it is under the max size and weight and we have never had a problem. Go to 45 lbs and most commercial bags like DaKine and Ozone are fine. Twin tips and kites are never a problem. Surfboard has to get paid for as a surfboard. You can even pre pay when you check in. Coming back we usually have dripping wet sandy gear and they dont care. _________________ Ozone Reo's. C&k Beach Boy Service, Windsurfing Waikiki, Hawaiian Windriders, NSRN. |
