Lost kite at sea.

Dumped my 9m green RPM in the surf today btwn LotB & Shipwreck - to save my kite from a split canopy!
I'd take a split canopy now, instead of NO kite & bar!!! If anybody runs across a washed up kite on the beach tomorrow please let me know - Thanks!

Can you tell us all how you can lose a kite like this? Why didn't it just wash up on the shore along with you?

Oh dear. were you swimming for so long that you lost sight of it? or do you think someone snatched it up? bummer either way girl. hope you find it.

Sorry to hear about that. A guy lost his kite, bar and board here and it went out to sea on off shore winds. Hope you get it back.

Hi All ,
I was on Maui last and learned to kite some wave . I was saying things like dump the kite if it hits the water so it doesn't get ripped to shreds . I was told not to do this as the kite is what gets you over the reefs and home .
I did get tossed several times . I was at the spot just past Paia . Lanes . I had gotten only a short way back to kite beach and disaster , kite in the water, three well overhead waves pulled my kite and I very hard and fast under water . I held on to my release so if I was under too long I'd have let it go. I worked the lines each time I popped up and finally after the third wave one corner of the Taco lifted and it launched before #4 wave hit .
I'm not a regular wave rider but had heard to dump it before . Recently read another post about this , seems mixed opinions .
My thought is to decide after trying to get the kite up or get yanked through with the kite ready to release first . I would rather have the kite to get my ass outta there .
A wrecked kite from wave or torn up on the beach whats the diff if it gets to that ?!

Crab pot buoy could have snagged it. Don't know if you guys have as many in the surf zone as we do. They are good for letting you know where you are if point sailing but not so good for the kite swim team. Keep the faith.

Hey Jack,

Maui waves are a little crumbly, so the kite is usually hit by whitewater and will almost always survive. When the waves are more critical, it can destroy the canopy. Biggest thing is to try and not be too deep in the water, thus providing a lot of resistance to the drag you're about to go through.

That totally sucks Kirstan!! I guess when we hit the coast we should make sure to write our names & phone numbers on the kite too... with a big sharpie... in Japanese!

Sorry Kirstan. This happens from time to time here. The shoreline between Ft Stevens and Gearhart is curved so even though onshore, the kite will tumble downwind and have trouble getting to shore. I would check w/the fire & police departments in Gearhart and Seaside. Check Cleanline and I'll put the word out to fishermen who work the coast here.

Had a local guy two years ago lose his kite up there and a fisherman picked it up. In poor form he didn't offer a reward, beer or anything so that same fisherman probably won't pick up another one Crying or Very sad

its a good idea to notify coast guard, police/fire.

they are trained to SEARCH (for U, not the kite) but thats what they want to do if they get a repot of a kite/boat no rider/captain. tell them your ok.

plus when/if they get the call about a lost parachute/possible terrorist invasion/windsurf sail washed up they might call you.

Ok whose headed to coast today to look for the Kite? Meet at Lot B? I heard the reward is pretty significant.

Camp Rilea is conducting firing practice with at its firing range through Thursday, the beach is closed about .5 miles south of the shipwreck to about .5 miles north of Sunset beach 24/7, plan ur downwinders accordingly. Practice going on thru Thurs.

I think they want 800 yards clearence from sea going vessels etc at a minimum. I also think the Camp would prefer nothing to be out there if they had a choice.

They told us 3000 yards off shore, they had to bring exercise to a halt because of three kiteboarders and one car entering firing zone.
