Wed May 11, 11 6:03 am OT: Hood River historical photos online |
|
|
A large number of Hood River historical photos are being digitized and made available for the first time online thanks to a grant from Google and the work of a local feller. Very cool. Bookmark and enjoy.
This 1915-1920 image of the Hood River waterfront is interesting to compare to an updated image. It's from afar, but when you compare it to "Blaine's view" (second paragraph of "Notes") taken in 2010, there are many noteworthy differences;

Thanks for posting that.
I like the one of the "flume"/"tube".
Here's an idea.... When they knock down the Condit Dam...
How about turning that flume into a very creepy mile-long-pitch black "water slide"?
Wolf down some dramamine, sit in a kayak, with a roller paddle, a helmet cam, and a miner's light. Post the video here.

Happy to see NWKiter's have found Historic Hood River. I'm the site host, so let me know if there is anything you want to see-- we take requests, and we have a pretty extensive collection. And let me know if you have any historic photos to contribute.
If you think wind sports don't have much history check out this quote I ran across from the HR News January 27, 1950. It is the reminiscence of an early HR resident about his younger years, late 1800's. Its the earliest account I've heard of the wind being used for recreation and of tourists traveling to participate. Most of the old reports I've seen just complained about wind capsizing ships and the like.
Quote: | Those were the days that I guess we will never see again. Cold weather didn't seem to hamper people so much. Anyway, from the recreation standpoint there was as much -- or more of -- to be had than now, and for free. You didn't have to worry about unheated gymnasiums or places to park the car near the theater. People didn't hover over a radio and forget they had neighbors and friends.
In those days besides the sleighs and sleds, you had skating for recreation and by golly there were adults and children alike out on the ice skating! One of the best sports of all was for two people on skates to hold onto an umbrella and, when the wind was blowing good and strong from the east, you'd skim down the Columbia river ice a mile or more.
Nor was the sport of skating on the Columbia here limited to local folks, either. It was nothing to see an excursion party of 50 or 60 get off the train from Portland, come up just to enjoy the fun. |

Didn't realize you were said feller who's the site host. I'm very interested to see any photos of the Hood River delta area in any of it's phases pre-1937 and any photos of the waterfront pre-marina and before the fill. I find it interesting imagining what it must have looked-like when walking the area on the east side of the Hood River between the current State street bridge and the walking bridge.
It would be nice to see the photos of the Hood River delta that were run in the Hood River News a few weeks ago posted, but in larger size and of the full photo. I've been staring at those small photos from the paper for the past few weeks and wishing I could see more detail. I realize that the lack of detail is partially a function photography in those days, but I keep wondering of some of the original photo was cropped-out.
Appreciate your efforts.

Jim, Here's a picture of the delta taken from very close to your house, circa 1915. The images we're posting on the photoblog are low-res scans which were done years ago for the museum's inventory database (<20% of the collection scanned). The Google grant will let us rescan those at high resolution and also scan the remaining 80+% of the collection.
The collection includes photographic prints and negatives (glass plates or film). The negatives should yield much more resolution when scanned properly. A 3x5 glass plate negative, even 100 years old, has a lot of fine detail if the photographer and camera were any good. Look for higher resolution images this summer, after we start the scanning project.

Here's a part of an amazingly detailed 1935 survey of the delta before it was flooded by the Bonneville Dam. Too big to post entire image here, but I can email it.

Cool thread. I am up at that viewpoint regularly biking and it's wild to see it with no bridge.

historichoodriver.com continues to deliver the goods...and it's just getting started. Today's post of the 1948 flood gives some historical perspective on our recent high water;

My grandmother's brother, Bob Vaughan, ran a dredge at the foot of the Hood River/Washington bridge where the marina is now. His family might have old photos. (He was also fire chief)
I have two photos obtained from the Oregon Historical Society. One is an aerial view of Hood River (order # 000973) from 1/15/1931 showing the Hood River delta with Mt. Hood on horizon.
The other photo is of the Nathaniel Coe residence (Order # ORHI 47080). A poor quality copy is at:

Wow. I guess it was colder in hood River back then. A mile of strong ice on the Columbia? Strong East winds in the Hood? It's amazing how weather patterns change over time.
