I am thinking of going to Hatteras next week for 2 1/2 weeks but have never been. Anyone have any advise for late Nov.- early Dec kiting. Can't find much on here on "Searces". Anyone interested in spliting costs?

I just got back from there and you'll want to make sure you bring a pretty good quiver with you. We rode everything from a 15m w/ a surfboard to a 7m overpowered. There are lots of options for lodging ranging from luxury to $20/night so you're covered there as well. The only other thing is that you'll want to make sure you have transportation as there are tens of miles of spots to ride up and down the outer banks and you don't want to be pigeonholed into the one outside your back door. Have fun!

To be honest I didn't ride wave but the spot opposite Kite Point had several riders there in big swell when the wind was pumping North and then there's a couple spots just north of Avon as well. Just look for the cars parked next to the road and kites in the sky, you can't miss them. I'd stop into Real and ask them too. They were super friendly and wanted to help out so I'm sure you can get some pointers there. In terms of lodging, I got lucky and went down with a crew that's been going for years, but there seemed to be a ton available this time of year so I'm sure either way you'll be fine.

check out the salvo marina for super cheap lodging. Super nice people but the conditions may not be favorable for some. They let us camp there in a van for two months this summer. Swing by the Hot tuna for some local fun

I used to live in Vermont and went to Hatteras every fall and spring for many years. IMHO late November and December are miserably cold. For every hour on the water in a 5mil suit, you'll spend 15 minutes in the hot shower. Hatteras is the place for late spring and early fall. Try S.P.I. for Thanksgiving.

It's a shame they are so vulnerable down there, and I can't really say you should have gone this week, since it would probably need to be a pack-in 4x4 prospect in the aftermath, but check the water temperatures, it's still practically summer-like by NW standards, actually. |
