First off, Ian, I'm not picking on you. I used to think the same thing about starbucks until I did a little reading.
Not so sure how they are exploiting people in other countries as they are THE largest buyer of fair trade certified coffee. Sure, not all the coffee they serve is fair trade certified, but neither is most of the other coffee houses you see around.
They also provide health care to any worker who works at least 20 hours a week. Ask your local part time or full time for that matter barista if they have health care coverage. And as far as pushing out mom and pop coffee stands... guess what market research has shown the best place to open a coffee shop is... in sight of an existing starbucks.
I think its easy to vilanize a huge company that for sure, absolutely dominates a market sector. Their hyper careful image obsession borders on creepy but in the end, you have to hand it to them as they are certainly doing more than a few things right. I mean, come on. They started as a small coffee chain in seattle and now globally dominate the coffee market. They didn't do that by not providing what customers wanted in an experience that they wanted.
Marketing is a creepy and soul sucking art but on some level, Starbucks deserves kudos.

if you drink just the doppio espresso
you'll find why they are the biggest
Thier espresso is better than almost everyone elses'
I used to think they were just another clueless giant pouring money from thier yuppie (young urban poor people )patrons pockets
but as a bit of a coffee snob I like thier espresso,
I roast my own and have had an espresso machine for almost 30 years
So I'm guessing that all of Slingshots goods that you use are fair trade?

I hear that. Starbucks drip coffee tastes burnt to me but there espresso isoney for sure. Drop 3.50 at the mom and pop coffee stand for a nasty latte and you will understand why SB dominates. Fair trade kites... That's pretty funny!

I actually go to a local outfit most days, but if SBUX wants to lose money today by giving away pastries I will be happy to oblige.
I go to .... in White Salmon on weekends. Its overpriced, slow, and not that tasty... but its local and I am glad they are walking distance from my place
Also the employees are cool
I sure hope this turns into a 10 page debate on starbucks!

Ha I havent done much research but I just know how much money coffee is making some people. Coffee farmers are getting, on average, 24 cents a pound while consumers in rich countries are paying roughly $3.60 a pound – a mark-up of 1500%.
I think that is really all that needs to be said.
