thought this was interesting:

'High winds, fog and river traffic that ranges from barges to fishing boats to kiteboarders can make it tricky to navigate the fuel barges, typically twice the width of standard barges.'

Very interesting! I just sent some pics & a video in to KGW... Joanne & I were out on the river yesterday boating, saw a barge coming up the river from Washougal. I'm like "HOLY S&^%T, he's WAY out of the shipping channel. Dead on course for the sand bar on Reed Island. (Just West of Rooster Rock.) The guy finally figures it out & goes and stops the barge and then backs up! Turns to the starboard heads back over to the channel. I've attached a jpg of the chart for the area. Green line is where he should have been, red line is where he was. The red circle is where he stopped & backed up. In cas you're not familiar with the area, the shipping channel is well marked with VERY visible markers to follow. He should have shot up the one range and then shifted to the other.

What the hell is up with Tidewater, and what do we do to stop them from eventually killing the Columbia River with their screw ups? (One barge full of fuel dumped into the river would be an ecological disaster.)

Doesnt the barge just move through the channel and smaller vessels get the f out of the way??? Doesnt seem like there is much maneuvering that needs to be done as far as dodging kiteboarders. haha.

I heard due to cut backs, Tidewater Inc. stopped their mandatory drug-testing last May

How much water does a loaded fuel barge draw? In none nautical language how deep does it have to be before it gets stuck?
Is the experience level of the Captains gone down?
I've been coming to the Columbia River for 25 years and think they are the greatest of Seaman. What has changed?
