This is from Michael at the Port. Please be respectful if you choose to comment on this post. The 4th of July is a community event that has been going on for years. The 4th of July weekend will be a great time to hit some other kiteboarding spots in the Gorge

Fireworks to close popular kiteboarding area
The Fourth of July holiday will limit access to Port of Hood River property beginning Friday, July 3. This will include a three-day closure at a popular kiteboarding launch area.
Hood River Eyeopeners Lions Club will begin setting up its fireworks display just west of the mouth of the Hood River on Friday, July 3. Volunteers will be burying fireworks used for the annual July 4 display over the Columbia River.
As a result, the Port of Hood River will close the Spit area Friday, July 3, and leave it closed until approximately noon Sunday, July 5. This site is designated as a kiteboarding launch area, but no access will be allowed while fireworks are present. Kiteboarders are welcome to access the Delta via the Event Site or use other launch sites in the Gorge, including the Hook.
The public should be aware the water level in the Columbia River is expected to begin rising by mid-day on the July 4, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Delta will be completely submerged and inaccessible by dusk.
General public use of fireworks is prohibited on Port property, including the Marina and Waterfront areas. This policy is strictly enforced.
Those watching fireworks from the Marina and the Waterfront are reminded the show’s conclusion usually brings heavy traffic congestion. Patience and cooperation help to ease the pressure created by the large number of vehicles attempting to exit the area at the same time.
For more information, call the Port of Hood River at (541) 386-1645. Last edited by Bettyboarder on Mon Jul 06, 2009 8:32 am; edited 1 time in total |

Still sounds okay to me, since we now have access via the Event Site.
Just need to keep all of our out-of-town tourist kiters in check.

| Yes, but it is still pump and dry only at the event site and in our limited space correct? We need to enforce that with people that it's not the whole event site or anything, and that there is no rigging! Just want to make sure there is clarification. |

You are correct. NO rigging at the event site. _________________ Cleverly disguised as an adult...

Not according to the July calendar that was in my packet for the last port meeting. Just the spit is closed.
There is an exclusive use scheduled for CGWA - Windfest on June 28th & 29th |

odd, there are signs on the Event site bathroom notifying windsurfers and kiteboarders of the closure. Maybe someone can take a look at those signs if they are there today and chime in.
Thanks,
Henry

| so when are they gonna decide to move the whole show from the super popular and crowded sandbar beach to the totally empty marina beach. just asking. seems like a pretty obvious way to stop irritating so many people and a number of businesses that dont really appreciate being inconvenienced every year. |

Trying to get that worked out at least for the future years....as of right now don't count on kiting in HR that weekend...there are alot of great spots along the Gorge and Coast that would love and appreciate kiteboarder's business. |
