Wed Jun 03, 09 11:00 pm board for the coast |
|
|
I'm new to kiting on water, been flying on land for a while, and have been trying to find some good info on boards but much to my surprise haven't been able to find much. What style of board works best for the coast? I don't plan to ride waves, just bop over them and cruse around. I'll be spending most of my time riding in Manzanita; not having been on the water there much, don't know about the chop factor, but I assume it's like most of the north coast.
I've also been given advice by several different people to start off big (158) for the early plane, to go not so big (148), and then of course to stay small (138) :/ So I'm pretty much left thinking wts I can't seem to find any sites on the net that agree! I'm #210 and generally like to fly either on or just under powered. Any opinions out there |

You'll want a bigger board for your weight. 145-155, with some rocker.
Go see Josh at Cleanline next time your down there...he has some SS Fuses that would be a great choice for you at Manzo. |

Most seem to ride twin tips no smaller than 140.
The nice thing is that you can ride it in almost any location and conditions and it travels well.
The new fun board, peoples choice, is a directional surf style board.
Slither is right on with the fuse, it would be a good all round board and there are many around new and used.
have fun.
hope the wind comes back soon. |

| When the wind gods grace us again, and you make the trip back up here to the buggy beach "sunset", your welcome to try out my LF 151. It might be a little big, but its been a great starter board for me out here. |

Thanks for the replies... my instructor reccomended an OR mako 150 wide or a caution hustler 145 style board. aka 145-155, >40 wide, and plenty of rocker. I've done a bunch of reading on the boards posted here and I think I want to stay twin tip for now. I'm really starting to like the idea of a mako. I've heard nothing but rave reviews of the last two model years. It looks like the main difference in the latest model is the single fin. any opinion on this? I saw a few expo interviews that said that the single fin is for wave stabaility and that since you're on edge most the time you don't need the fins. Any opinions on this?
Loop, I'd love to check out your proof... I was eyeing those at GP the other day... I'll be at sunset on the 20th (next weekend) for the buggy meet, but hopefully I'll already have a board by then |

I ended up getting the mako 150x40... from the sounds of it I'll be riding this board until I'm grey, er well, more grey. So far it's absolutely fantastic for upwind body drags thru the waves |
