| Has anyone camped at the grassy campground just below the dam, and kited there? What are the amenities there like (pit or flush toilet, showers, etc.). What is it like to kite there besides lots of current? |

I used to camp there as a windsurfer many years ago when it was still funded for grounds maintenance by the feds. Perfect grassy lawns. Now it's dead and dried up but the bathrooms still work. Always drove to nearby launches because of the close proximity of the Dam. Some train noise. Get's packed with sturgeon fishermen in the Summer. _________________ CGKA Member

How far downstream from the John Day would people normally launch? Other than the gargantuant dam downwind what are other hazards? Part of my work territory is that way so I'm there 3-4 times a month. There's definitely plenty of room for launching and landing. |

| just drive down to the gravel pit parking lot west of the freeway on/off ramp end of the road less than 1 mi. too many people fish in the upper area. lots of kitters camp down in the rock pit area and they smell a little better then the fishermen. hazards strong current barges comeing out of the locks get to you really fast so look upstream every jibe. |
