| Does any one know of any good and not too expensive waterproof housings for a Nikon D40 camera? |

If you're looking for inexpensive, I doubt you're going to find much in the way of housings. Look into "waterproof bags"... Aquapacs, etc. Unless you need something ultra-durable (getting pounded in the surf), they're far most cost effective.
Either that, or see what Jim would charge ya for a custom one! |

| No idea, though you do have to remember that he most likely doesn't have a file for the D40. |

| I think Jim quoted me around $200 for a video housing. but the video housings are allot less complex than a DSLR housing because you need to access allot more buttons. |

hey a buddy of mine had a "custom" waterhousing for his D1 that burst while freediving...I'd say for an expensive camera get a real good waterhouse..or the alternative..get something like the canon g9 or g10 and a housing for 1/3 of the price of just the housing for the SLR's...of course they aren;t as powerful, but the G series uses the same image chip as the xti series....

I'm an underwater photographer. My recommendation is Ikalite. I own all ikelite products for my Under water photography. They stand behind their products. Yes, it's a little expansive, but worth it. It is going to be cheaper than any other brands. But you can see through the housing at all times. So if for some reason, you didn't put the housing together right, you will see the water getting in. I have never had a leak in any of my Ikelite housing. I have had mine for over 5 years. Here is a link if you want to check it out. Bags work, as long as you use them in the rain or on the surface of the water. If you need to submerge your housing than go ikelite. Other brands start at 2 to 3 grand and go up. Ikelite does make one for the D40 that gives you full access to all your buttons. Check it out.

I've been known to make some housings.
I CNC Machine them from Solid ABS plastic and they are watertight, well at least for my application.
I only use them for kiteboarding media.
So that means I'm not really going deep underwater with them. I'm sure they would hold, but need to test for those depths. What is unique about my housings, other than the physical appearance, is I use a double O rings around the door.
I recently upgraded my cameras and lens so now I have to make new housings.
I have a couple of extra housings that work well with the 20d bodies.
video housings seem to involve less effort and I think I have come up with a design that is easy for me to produce.
As with all my housings, I'll build a prototype and try it out. I'll let you know how those work out.
As for the SLR housings, these can become very labor intensive, so most likely cost prohibitive for the weekend photographer. _________________ www.jimstringfellow.com |

phew, good thing I have a canon 40d.
kind of funny how both brands have models that are just separated by putting the D in front or back. |

| At $109 that looks way more stout than the "ewa" marine bags that run $400+. Nice find! |

| I had my buddy get a Dicapac for his little Canon point-n-shoot a few weeks back, but he hasn't used it yet as his cruise to Mexico got canceled. Said it looks pretty solid though, and they had good reviews. Didn't realize they made one for bigger cams though! I'd say, go for it! |
