Chris, displacing a bit of that dirty Columbia water. |

Yes that is an old Free Air that Joe rides, and yes he rips harder than anyone in the NW in high wind. |

This trough will do nicely I think! |

Jumping on small kites isn't so much fun, but my favorite kiting conditions these days are 3m GTO or 5m Fuel on 12m lines with SX51 skimboard. In these conditions, windsurfers are on 3.5m - 4.0m. It's funny, but now I find myself looking at the forecast and waiting for those big days out east. It's great when the current is ripping and the swells are big!

Come Spencer don't lie man! Riding swell on a small kiteboard in 30knots rules! The main thing is to remember that jumping should not even cross your mind and it is all about throwing buckets. When the gusts hit, you just give it up and rip on down wind!
Got me a 6m and 15m lines on order, and can't wait until the knee is well enough to deal with these kind of conditions.
Kite on, Bam, bam bam

It's about time that we came to terms with nuking winds
and boxcar sized swell.
Spencer,
Whats the difference in range between the 3 Gto and 5 Fuel?
Do you ride them 'underpowered'? -with a stock bar?
I admire that you ride a skimboard - doesn't it blow away when
you loose it?

You might as well take advantage,,
You realize I hope that the river current makes that wack crack at least worth it.
If it wasn't for the current stacking up those swells your spot would be like any other non current place, just blown out unpredictable chop from hell.
Without that current you'd be fu't.
rio vista as swell only on the ebb.
you guys ebb 24/7/365.
I'd not whine about high winds,,,,you guys got it good.
meaning,,you got big swell to play on, that's way cool...
High wind elsewhere tends to be a pain, literally can rattle the fillings out of your teeth.
Round here high wind is shifty,,,you end up pounding, straight into the chop.
Do, be happy...

Hey Fo...
Yeah, no complaining here! Wait until later this summer when the wind really howls and the swells set up like a Grey Hound bus in a triple roll over accident. My water housing is coming soon and I plan to sail out and sit right in the middle of that mess, and lets my friends shred it all around on whatever wind vehicle turns their cranks.
I would like to get some shots of Chris, Joe, and Spencer out at Three Mile in double overhead swell on kites. One of these days I am going to have to find someone to click some pictures of me riding (when the knee gets a wee bit better), or everyone is going to think I have forgotten how to kite/sail.
Bam... out!

Hey Fo,
I take it Rio Vista is where you hail from? Rio rocks, me and a buddy went down there last summer for 9 days straight of kiting in July. It blew everyday from dawn until dusk... Downwinders from kitopia are awesome as well as hucking the thules.
Love that place.

Hi Hein,
The GTO is an old cheap used kite that I got a while ago. Don't know what size it's supposed to really be. It says "3m mislabeled as 5m" on it. The actual area of the kite is 3m at best, when laid out on my 5m. Well, that's assuming that the 5m is really 5 sq. m's. Maybe the GTO sizes aren't so accurate. I do ride them pretty underpowered. I use my own kooky home-made bars. I also run power steering bridles on the kites so they're really easy to sheet in and turn with one hand.
When it's blowing spray, the skimboard does tumble downwind pretty far when I crash, but it's easier to chase it down wind than it is to stick out one arm and try to point upwind to retrieve the board on a light wind day. Haven't lost a skimboard yet, but who knows.

spencer,
what do you use for traction on your skimboard? wax, the foam pads, or spray on grip stuff?
also, do you jibe the board or just ride switch?
i rode a skim in underpowered conditions today and it was fun, but i don't know you do it in big wind and big water.

I use foam traction pads. Wax is great, but it always melts in the car on hot days. I always jibe. It seems impossible at first, but after a while, its actually pretty fun to switch your feet.

How the hell do you jibe a skimboard ?
Every time I tried to move my feet I fell off the board
A friend said to pivot on my front foot, not try and lift it like windsurfing.
Here is a picture of me stuck on toeside after a jibe
