Are you hungry? Good. Head down to the Hood River Marina for opening day of sailing season. Hood River Yacht Club members serve pancake breakfast at the Clubhouse today from 9 to 11:30. Your pancake purchase supports community sailing lessons as well as Hood River's version of sailboat racing (super-casual, lots of fun), so kick down and eat up. Afterwards, con your way onto a big boat for a Nascar-themed parade in today’s high winds.
Speaking of wind, it’s windy. Duh. Early morning gradients were .14, and it’s only going to get windier with the passage of a weak system later. The passing system brings out the gusties, but we’ll have 28-32-plus from Hood River to Arlington, possibly stronger at Doug’s! Really, I would not be surprised to see 30-40 at Doug's later, given how strong the wind is now and how strong the gradients are. I have heard that the dam is wide open at John Day, so it's probably an awful lot of current for the Wall. Anyone sailed out there in the last 3 or 4 days? I could use some beta. =) For less wind, try Stevenson. Be aware that the dams are open everywhere and the current is strong. That means big swell and lots of drifting. Be aware: sail with care! Wait... be aware ski with care... whatever...
High pressure builds tomorrow, knocking winds down. We’ll see a 21-25 morning, fading in the afternoon. Tomorrow is a good day for the reverse daily double: kite or windsurf in the morning and ski or snowboard or freeheel in the afternoon.
In biking news, Tomorrow is the Bear Springs Trap oldschool cross-country mountain bike race. Google it for more info. It’s also the Cherry of a ride 30-100 mile road ride through the Dalles orchards, where everything’s blooming. For Hood River blooms, swing past the flowing pears and apples at McCurdy farms!
Whatever you choose today, have an awesome time! |
