Snowkite season is in spring mode with warmer storms and longer and longer days. We're kiting on thicker powder, for sure, more like the stuff that NW kiters are used to and this will keep going until the beginning of June.

So if you have the time and love the hi-country, see ya out there!

Here's a few pics from last week from atop the Continental Divide in the Centennial mountains on the Montana/Idaho border.

Sheep and Taylor Mountains are north of the Island Park Reservoir. Here's a GoogleEarth image and a higher res topo map of the spot. It's about 12 miles of sled riding to get there.

Nice boosts on Grassy, Cale. That mountain is so much fun!

Keep your board waxed, the Beartooths are coming up in May and, as always, it's epic, jaw-dropping snowkiting.

Here's a couple pics from May 30th '08.

Noah--

Central Montana right? US212 for the road, but how far from say, Idaho Falls or Jackson Hole to get to the site in your pics?

The water's warming up but all I can think about is corn snow and bluebird days high in the Mtns--share the wealth friend, we're Jonesing over here!

Hwy 212 - the Beartooth Highway - travels the route between Cooke City and Red Lodge, Montana, NE of Yellowstone Park.

It's about 240 miles from Idaho Falls to the spot at Beartooth Pass (at almost 11,000').

The Highway 212 is closed in the winter and gated at Cooke City. It is gated right now and will be until the plows get going in early May.

The road officially opens the Memorial Day weekend between the two towns. It's a big party with lots of riders hitting the steeps and tourists driving through. There are only a few kiters.

However, while not official, in a couple of weeks from now - around the beginning of May, one can drive around the barricade and drive to the 9800' level near Long Lake. There is a kite spot there, and just before that as well. If you don't mind a one mile walk (only 300 vertical) , one can get past a band of timber and access the switchbacks. From there the kiting seems limitless. It's truly alpine and full of hazards. Definitely fun stuff and it's where I'll be spending the month of May. Interested?

Here's a detailed topo of some of the area

See ya out there,

Noah

You've got some sick terrain up there, limitless is right. I've been scoping some high elevation kiting in the Wallowa Mtns--ride the gondola after Memorial Day then thousands of acres of high alpine plateau kiting is for the taking, but the Beartooths look ridiculous.

240 from IF is a grip considering distance from Boise, but if I get a wild hair I'll PM ya to get the lowdown, thanks for the detailed info yo! Hopefully Wallowa will put out the goods and I'll be deep in the High myself.
