I am still not going to say get a new board. I am still going to say that learning on what you have will be fine, and that once you are up and moving around--10 sessions +/---there are things that will work better, but by no means an end all.

Jeeez Brett, you hounding me or what? I guess if you had trounced me at chess I would do the same thing.
BTW the fuse is long gone. It would be a great newb board though. good float, upwind like a champ and about as good as a twintip gets in the waves.

Make a lightwind board out of plywood and learn on that. I learned on an old Drake and I wish I would have started on something really wide. Hein made me a DIY flywood a couple years back and my first time on it I could instantly go upwind. I don't know if he's doing the DIY board anymore, but he took some pics of mine like he was going to sell some more. Or just cut out a shape and go with it. There are a couple of "make a light wind board" threads here. When you are up and riding you could then invest in a nice board and have a board for fooling around with in light wind.

| I have a board that I'd like to throw a grab handle on, but it isn't pre drilled for one. If i drill small pilot holes and screw it in...will it hold?

Depends on the board. If it's something older with a mainly foam core such as what we were talking about above, nope, it's probably not going to hold (unless you drill all the way through). It it has wood stringers then you may be able to, but without sealed inserts, you'll probably just "ruin" the board. I'd either use stick on inserts (also posted above), or find a way to link between your straps/pads. Better yet, just ditch the handle!

In experimenting with foot strap positions in thin ( 1"- )boards
I've been able to hog out the deck and attach the screw in type insert
and then resin them to the bottom of the board filling the hole with some cloth on top
and thusly making a hinge but they didn't come out and the boards never hinged,,
there,
yet
But I don't have handles on my boards
so don't know the forces involved
