Jeff, actually you can take two surfboards in a bag.. From the alaskan website.
Surfboards:
One item of surfing equipment is defined as one surfboard, not required to be in its case, or a surfboard case with up to two surfboards inside. Customers checking surf equipment are charged standard overweight/oversize charges. Note: On Alaska Flight series 1-999, the maximum single dimension is 9 ft. On Horizon Flight series 2000-2999, the maximum single dimension is 8ft. |

Also, it seems that some sporting gear .. golf clubs, fishing gear etc, can be larger than 62 inches combined without paying the oversize charge and can be up to 120 or 112? inches combined.
Surfboards and what not automatically pay the overage if they are over 62 inches. That is why it pays to smile and be pleasant to the people at the ticket office. Or on domestic flights, to check at the curb and make sure you have that $10 bill tip clearly visible when your handing the bags and showing your tickets..
Amazing what people will let slide for $10. J |
