Personally, I am a little reluctant to make sweeping negative generalizations of another profession, especially one that doesn't go begging for government bailouts.

The products I work on and the tools I use seem pretty robust to me. I remember both macs and PCs crashing quite regularly 15-20 years ago, they are clearly more reliable now.

I like that air-traffic controller joke - "You land 1000 planes without a hitch, no-one says nothing. But one little mid-air collision and you never hear the end of it."

Ian, if you resisted buying some techno equipment because a better one is on the way in a year or two I doubt you would have any techno equipment. products evolve and get better. Companies are not releasing shitty items and "saving the better technology" for next year Rolling Eyes not exactly a profitable business plan.

Sounds like someone ran out and but an i-phone last year. LOL

Nope never BUT or BOUGHT an iphone, you think i have the money for that?? I wish.

Sounds like a pretty good business plan to me, you and all your corpo homies decide not to release all the newest shit right away, give you some vacation time since you already have some shit developed, then you release it a year later, call it "new" technology.

Everything in our economy is about getting this most profit, and this directly leads to dishonest business. Business in America can never be non-bias because this would inhibit profit. If the store next to your shoe store is selling shoes that are really better than yours and you know it, you arent going to tell your customers to go next door and buy that dudes shoes.

I think the way our economy works will eventually change for the better.

Im sure there is more we can agree on, or argue about. I would say the main reason behind this argument has to start with the Federal Reserve, which could possibly be the most corrupt endeavor ever.

My bigger question here is: Stringer did you give credits to the music in your video?
But it's for the specific reason that iTunes puts limits on their songs that I avoid buying music on iTunes and is saved for a last resort.

Yeah, I gave credit in the video itself.
Also there was nothing in the description about the music.
There's no way anyone could have found my video by searching for Blackalicious, Blazing Arrow, or anything relating to the music.

Oh yeah and Stringer, Ive had a video taken down for the same reason, its kinda funny in a way when yours gets taken down out of the millions of videos on there. Prolly hundreds with that song.

Seriously
My video had only ~200 views too!
I think its lame that when I spend time to try and produce a video with that song in mind to entertain my friends its just thrown away.
Moral of the story:
Ask first so that the time I spend on the video isn't for nothing.

this whole thing reminded me about this:

especially starting at ~5:20

And about the software thing
Is there any law in place that says that someone can get in trouble for buying a product from a company that has acquired their software less than legally?
You'd think it would be easy enough for the tax man to find a $50k discrepancy in their budget.

damn, 4 pages! A snowless december sure is boring!

Not sure about the letter of the law. But if you tell us who, then we could boycott them. Hope it is not a Kitesurfing company but that wouldn't surprise me. It's really not fair for their competitors who are properly licensing the software they use. And the software company they are stealing from.

yes there is.
If you know about it, you get in trouble. So, if the deal is too good to be true, you'll get into trouble. You can not claim ignorance, if common sense would tall you it is piracy.
You'd have less liability..but still get punished...

you can expect to see more of this kind of thing as the digital age evolves...

This is nothing new, During my musician days we had an agent from ascap come into the bar and listen to us play for about an hour, during a break he came up and wanted to bring up the copyright infringment issues of playing a cover song. turns out you have to pay if you want play a certain song. As an artist, I have spent hours rehearsing a cover song, and to end up paying for the rights is a slap in the face. Alien

Even that jukebox we all know and love,....subject to copyright infringment and there are dues to be paid.

In the end its up to you the consumer and how wise you consume.

Don't mean to start anything, but I have an update.
I contacted the bass player of The Cardigans (they are really accessible and have an awesome ask the band thing on their website)
Here's the Q&A:
Quote:
Hi,
Sorry this is kind of a downer question, but I really want the opinion of a popular artist. I was wondering how you guys felt about people using your music in homemade amateur videos that aren't being used for any kind of promotional purposes. Just sharing online with friends. I haven't used any of your music, nor am I asking for permission to use it. I was mostly interested in how you feel about this.

Thanks
-Andrew

Hej

Hmm I don´t know... As long as it´s not porno or anything like that, guess it´s ok....
Noone´s buying records anyways, so why not use that as promotion for our songs? Wink

Just an opinion of a popular recording artist.
Not trying to start anything.
Whole thing reminds me of the song "Dinosaurs Will Die" by NOFX

The Cardigans are awesome!
You may have heard this song in the Double Decade by Mack Dawg

See how cool it is to 'ask first'?

You provide respect and in return get permission in
the form of a personal note from the band!

It's a wonderful day for creative intellectual property.
No need for arcane laws if everyone behaved this way.

The RIAA and MPAA have just created a way to suck more money out of the artists. It's hardly about protection of intangible/imaginary property.

Power to the people. Power to those who can circumvent the limitations unfairly imposed on us. Apple's iTunes make it's so that you can't freely use the music you've purchased. The amount of money they've spent developing this protection which is so easily removed is retarded and drives the cost of music up without any benefit to the artist or user.

Requiem is a tool to that takes your licenses for the music/videos you've purchased from iTunes and decrypts the files so that you are no longer at the will of iTunes.

You can find version 1.8.2 that works with iTunes 8.0.1 via this Google search which will lead you to a bittorrent: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Requiem+1.8.2
