Upon arrival, I was wondering if there was a chemical spill or something up-river. Windy and not a kiter in sight! My skills are still pretty sketchy as a newb rider, but figured the spit at Lyle has to be the safest spot to go solo on the river - particular on a rare west wind day in late November.

Rigged a 9M and was powered up fine 2:00-4ish, easily gusting upper 20's, but up/down. Got to practice self launching (using mud as a sail weight). And the spit is still ALL there - no puddles between the debris field and the river. Water 50 degrees --- air a balmy mid 50's. Comfortable in my 5/4. No gloves needed! Did the ol stop and drop thing, plus face plants. But it was kinda cool to have the river to myself - a first in my experience. Too addicted to let a little seasonal shift fuck with the learning curve.

Tho next time, I'll be sure to ask who else wants to go. Great to share the stoke too!!! Very Happy

Cool! Glad you got the goods! Solo sessions are fun every now & then. Plus, they really help you become more self-sufficient.

You owned it!

Everyone else squandered it!

Thumb's Up

I am particularly butt hurt about that day. Stuck workin in Mosier knowing Lyle is kicking.

I remember when I was learning to self launch at lyle a few years ago. Had the beach all to myself but at least it was mid August. Props for stickin to it hardcore in the "off" season. Wish I had a car to go west today!

Thanks Intrepid! Hope to keep going "off" season as long as possible...

It was cool having the beach to myself, tho next time I'm alone --- think I'll try self launching using the screw in dog thingie and carabiner method. The Lyle spit is more mud/silt than sand; learned mud does not slide off the kite near as easy as sand - drug my kite around a bit trying to bounce the mud off before it went airborne.

I was amazed how comfortable I was in late November! Actually, Tuesday heading home from work saw a couple more kiters catching balmy west wind at Lyle (around 3:45) --- under sunny sky pushing 60!

Yea, I'm stuck at work today - looks to be ripping a chilly 5-6M at the west end of the Gorge - wonder who rode that today Shocked

Figured I would recycle this tread,

Went to Lyle today 10-25ish on a 9.5
Decent wind and powered most of the time. Had lots of fun!
No one else out there besides my brother and I.

Anyways got a little of my fix (being on something smaller than a 12)
Hope someone else out there got a sesh!

Glad ya got in a fix Intrepidquest! Now how rare is getting a 9M westerly day into the 2nd week in December?! Surprised

Good timing --- cause I don't think even a heated drysuit would keep ya warm with the big chill expected this weekend.
