Fri Nov 28, 08 11:41 amBoracay Philippines January 23 to February 15th
I'm setting up a trip to the Philippines, I will be renting a 3 bedroom "Italian Guest House" that is directly on the kite beach for about $40 a day. I am told that food will be about 2-3 Euros per day ($5). Beer is about a $1 in the bars (so I am told).
I expect transportation to come in at a about $1100 US total. Getting there will be a flight to Manilla (I paid $852 for my ticket), then another short flight over to and island near Boracay, then a boat ride to the island.
While in the PI I will plan to take an IKO Instructor course February 2nd through the 6th. I believe there are still opening in this course if you are looking to get certified.
There are also school that will teach kiteboarding if you want to learn and get a jump on the NW Season.
I have 2 extra bedrooms available if anyone is interested for part or all of this trip.

Diggy, unless you have all your plane tickets booked already, there is a much cheaper way to get to Boracay. From manilla, take a bus to Batangas. it takes about an hour or two. From the Batangas pier you can easily get a boat to take you to Boracay.
Since your white, a bunch of guys will be asking you if your going to Boracay. nowadays, there is probably a high speed ferry that goes there. By the time you get on and off a plane and take another boat from wherever your going to fly to; you could have already been there.
I was a piece corps volunteer in the PI for a little over two years and spent 3 weeks on Boracay on a UCSD diving expedition to sample sponges and tunicates for cancer research.
Fun place for sure. And the nightlife is...wow. Not exactly a place you bring your girlfriend to
Oh yeah, if you are a diver forget the stuff close in. The locals have bown up or poisened most of the reefs close in. Really sad actually.
Find a dive shop to take you to Maning-ning island. Its an hour boat ride from Boracay but there is a 200 foot wall there that is virtually untouched. Sharks, grouper, huge corals, sea fans, you name it. Best dive I have EVER been on.

Looks really cool Diggy! But, sadly, you'll want to cancel your trip. The NWkite party is on Feb 6... Really, three weeks in a kiteboarding paradise, or the party of the year?
Take me with you.

my wife and I went to Boracay last year....you're in for a treat. great time! good wind, nice people (mostly), just a great scene. It will be more expensive than you think, but is worth it.
I reccomend the rolex fakes for all your friends, at $15 each they are a great gift. How often can you give yer bro's a rolex? (even if it's fake)

Well, the airfare is not refundable so I guess I'll just have to loose it to make the party. yeah right...
Thank for all the great advice.
The land/boat route sounds like a bit of fun in getting to travel through the country, though with gear and all it may be a bit of a drag. On google earth I measured it as 70-80 mile buss ride from Manilla to Bantagas and then a 150 mile boat ride from Bantagas to Boracay.
The airport in Caticlan is about a 15 minute boat ride from Boracay so that is pretty minimal. I'll let you know which route I choose as a learn more.
Do not bring my sandwich to the buffet, is that what you were saying Mnky?
I was Padi certified but have not dived in 15 years now. I may re-cert when I am there depending on how things go. I have a friend from Texas who is a diver if she can make the trip diving would be more likely.
I saw the fake Rolex watches being sold on the streets when I was in Manila, along with Viagra. I didn't have need for the time or Viagra but I suppose they make great gifts.
Anyway, I am stoked to have something to look forward too. My friend from Texas might go, but no solid commitments yet.
Be cool to get a NW Kite crew riding the the Pilippines. _________________ www.cautionkites.com

Was just a suggestion. I took the manilla batangas trip many a time and was living on a very small little island called Sibuyan about ummm, 200 miles or so from Boracay?
Manilla is truly one of the biggest cess pools I have ever encountered but man, some of the outlying islands still offer some real adventure for those who seek it. Man, I had some good times in the PI for sure and would love to get back there but soo little time....
