So I put away the film, for a while at least.

I'm trying to figure out all this digital stuff....

Anyway, I bought Lightroom and I am liking it a lot.

My question is are you guys converting your RAW files to DNG? I can't decide if it is worth doing it or not. It sounds like I will not loose anything by doing that, but if dng does not catch on I may wish I would have kept my NEF files.

Thanks,
Andy

Let's just say that I'd like to figure out how to process my images....

I'm a complete noob to Digital. I got a digital camera and shot like mad Now I have 8 gazillion pics that I need to do something with.

Thanks again,
Andy

Well I have not worked with DNG, but I am hesitant. Why not just keep the raw files for preprocessing? I like Adobe's idea, but isn't it a little like Microsoft trying to patent the XML format?

I'd say keep the raw as is, and use it as a starting point for your editing. Of course, thats kjust my 2 cents.

a. oh, and I am no photographer....

I am shooting everything in RAW. It sounds like keeping everything in raw is the way to go.

I am shooting with a D200. I have a lot to learn. It's a lot different than all of my old manual 35 mm cameras.

Memory is cheap but why use a resource faster than you have to. Many file formats support both lossy and lossless compression. With lossless you can compress your images with zero data loss, just as the name implies. You really can have your cake and eat it too...

DNG conversion is 20% smaller than RAW. Memory is cheap but after 10 years shooting memory gets pretty expensive... especially when you figure in data redundancy.
