Mon Oct 27, 08 3:17 pm Newbie Foot Hook Question |
|
|
| I just started learning to Kite this Sept and am aready hooked on it. I am planning a trip to La Ventana this Jan for 3 months and wanted to bring an old surf board along, but doubt I will be able to stand on it for quite some time without something to hold my feet on while starting out. Any opinion if those FootHooks would aid a newbie in this. (I like the idea of eventually going strapless as I built my first skim board in 1980) |

Don't the foot hooks need inserts? If you have inserts on the board just get some straps. You can always take em off later. If you don't have inserts then you can buy stick on pads (NSI, etc.) that come with inserts for straps or can be used w/o straps. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

| yeah, I think you'll get comfortable with strapless in an afternoon, if not shorter. wouldn't worry about it if youre down there for 3 months. but if you want straps/hooks, then, by all means... |

| Actually that was my first idea... I work at a waterproofing (buildings) Co. in pdx and was going to glue down some thin dense rubber matting (like a thin truck bed liner) and screw some straps to it, but was thinking it might be better for switching directions and versitility using the hooks |

| Wax works fine and is cheap if you're just starting strapless. A full pad will be really heavy and makes your board fee dead. The cushion of a good surf traction pad will help you stay on and if you get some with inserts then you'd be able to put on straps or hooks if you want. Then just put some wax on the area between the pads where you will put your foot while gybing. Some strips of traction pad would also work. I use ClearGrip but it doesn't work so well if you wear booties. |

oh ya Holly
like you'd know
anything about anything
SURF
but flame him if you must
oh the question
i forget
If you have a surf background
without is much easier
and even if you don't it's still easier unstrapped
the only time you would want to add straps is when you need to jump
a closeout
or if you are concerned about getting back to your board ,eg. riptides |

| Its ok even if you were Holly I am green as can be especially when it comes to using a surf board with a kite. I was just worried about getting to Mexico and wishing I had done something different. Thanks for all the imput from the whole frey. I read a post last week where a newbie was tring to figure out how to get started on the board and had the same concern. Not worried about once I get going (waves, losing board...) But if its what you say and these hooks, straps and such are not a necessity in future I will take a lesson and learn from there. thanks again all. |
