| no I stayed on the inner half of the surf zone. I didn't venture out into anything higher than overhead. I was also about a mile south of the jetti, as not to risk ending up on the rocks. Overall it was quite a bit more fun than sleeping in. |

Coast Guard rescue happening out at the Jetty today - chopper pulled one guy out of the water, and loaded him on the ambulance, then continued searching around the north and south jetties for at least a couple hours. Didn't look good. I don't know if a boat went down, someone got swept off the jetty, or what. I don't think it was Spike cause it wasn't windy at all - but maybe it was 11 knots.
Winter ocean on the OC is serious business- don't end up as food for the crabs. |

I was wondering if something like that would happen this weekend, watching all the tourists out on the jetty and beach thinking that this is the type of weather you hear about on the news when some careless person gets too close to the ocean and either fall in of some random waves catches them off guard and gets them _________________ BIP- "YOUR GIRLFRIENDS FAVORITE" |

| Makes me think of surfing big days back home. You paddle and paddle knowing your never going to make it outside being young and stupid you try anyway usually in vain but a couple of times your catch a bit of a rip and suddenly you realize your right in the break zone and you start to paddle like fuck before the next set comes through......then your outside and the misery really starts....sets the size of houses seemed such a good idea on the beach..... |

NEWPORT, Ore. -- The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a 23-year-old man who was reportedly swept from a jetty in Newport.
Petty Officer Shawn Eggert said a Coast Guard crew escorting a vessel into Newport harbor Sunday morning was flagged down by a man who said he and a friend had just been knocked into the water by a wave.
He said the waves pushed him back to shore, but his friend was swept away.
The crew immediately starting looking for the man while a Coast Guard helicopter crew, the Newport Fire Department and the Oregon State Police were called to assist
Eggert said searchers have discovered a white hoodie matching the description of one worn by the missing man but no other sign of him. |

that sucks
seems like every year someone is drawn out to sea
It can happen so fast
2 years ago my wife and I were standing on the jetty
surveying the wind on a southerly
blowing a steady 30 and no rain
as we were watching the surf she said "look at that" and a small boat, bow up went floating by
we looked upstream and saw a large fish boat landing on a high tide only boat launch
and then the coasties were there with lights on ,milling around ,,
Turns out there was 3 guys about 70 ,standing in thier boat got hit with a 50 mph gust that had changed my mind about going out
and they all were blown out of thier boat ,
The fish boat had seen it and called the Coasties ,they then went over and picked up the old dudes ,they were so cold that they landed at the high tide launch
and rushed them home
The way I found out about this ,was that my new neighbor was in the fish boat and rescued these fools
so not only are youth young and dumb but
some elders as well
Tide was ripping so fast no way to even run down the jetty and keep up with the boat ,,
those dudes were seconds away from being chum
so if you are thinking this big surf is going to be fun
do like Spike and stay inside
it's what I do ,even with others around because if it's bad enough to fuk me,
it's not safe for my pals to come and get me (or anyone else) |
