I'm a newbie, just getting into my 2nd lesson next week, followed by 1-2 more and then looking to get some gear. I'm about 6'4" and 220 lbs. Any input would be appreciated!!!

Big question and everyones progression is different so your instructor will be able to help educate you on various kite styles etc. Also, this forum has many kite reps who will demo with you as well so use the search button and you'll be overwhelmed with good info.

Welcome to a selection process from hell because a lot of good gear is being produced now. Local is always good too.

I have a beginner gear guide halfway typed up but haven't got around to finishing and posting it.

The long and short of it..find a cheap used 07 or newer bow kite 9, 11, and 13 are probably your quiver sizes. inspect the kites seams, fabric and bridle. at your stage of the game, your not going to be able to tell that much difference (if any) between newer kites. So don't obsess about it.

If you go with one of the "big name" kites (slingshot, naish, best (i guess) you'll probably get more money out if later.

Get your used gear, get out on the water and get some skills under your belt. Then in 2010, when your ready to but brand new kites you can demo a bunch of brands and you'll know who on the beach has them.

Get a quiver of bigger kites (9-15M) and a board longer than 140cm...

I'm about your size and weight and you should definetly get a couple boards: one long, wide and flat for wind under 20mph and the other board for higher winds with some flex and carving ability. You will have more fun that way. I have a 9m, 12m and 16m cabrinha kites. They rule!! I fly my 16m the most cause the wind in my area is usually 15-20mph. I weigh the same and find that I need bigger kites to keep powered and upwind. I use my 16m up to 25mph and I don't even use my 9m unless its a steady 35mph or I don't get enough power to have much fun.

But the right board can make or break your day and with your weight larger is better.
Slingshot glide is a great board for wind under 20 and good for learning. Stay away from Waroo kites, yuck! You can get 2006 cabrinha kites for cheap and they are great kites with super easy water relaunching. Just shop around and read throught the old posts on here about gear and you will be fine...
