Manzanita is usually only good on a North wind, which hasn't happened for awhile, but as spring and summer approach, will be getting better. Bring your gear anyway, because you never know. I'd call Josh at Cleanline Surf and ask him about the current conditions and he'll let you know if it's decent and safe enough to kite.

The spring/summer wind at Manzanita is always very onshore, almost a WNW direction. Something to do with the thermal draw from the Nehalem River valley perhaps. Otherwise west winds don't typically blow unless there's been a recent cold front passage, more common in late winter/early spring. Any beach could have wind as the wind is generated more by the incoming weather and not because of the beach's location along the coast. Manzanita gets a lot of wind though. If you want side-off, which is so much better for wave riding, The jetty at Fort Stevens is less than an hour away. Good luck!

If the N winds are blowing, Manz will typically blow earlier in the day and build to wicked strong. Plan on re-rigging if you start early. The best winds for it are WNW as more N directional winds dirty up the place...that's a good time to head up or down the coast to more open beaches (Ft. Steven & Sunset Beach to the North and I like Rockaway or for a longer drive, Lincoln City's Roads End).

SW winds in the area are good too. Head out to Nehalem St. Park and launch in the Nehalem bay at the boat ramp, there's parking and usually good room to launch. Fairly tidal but this can be great flatwater kiting. I've also had lots of fun in SW's on the ocean launching from the Barview jetty (North jetty of Tillamook Bay). If the winds are steady and there's swell - it's a goofy foot creamdream!
