Thu Aug 21, 08 1:49 pm Sauvie in the fall? |
|
|
Tried to Search and saw that Sauvie starts to pump in the spring - was it flydunes who guessed april 13th - also from PDXmonkeyboy's posts in 2007 It looks like Sauvies may stop in september.
What is the deal, is it a wind direction thing? too dark/ too cold? what change takes place? is it really unridable or just not worth it?
Thanks and good winds to all.

We've ridden it in November and December, though like I just said in the other post, it's sketch. Definately takes a bit of eastly on a south day which isn't as common, and it's normally holey/gusty (which isn't great when the water's ~45 degrees).

In my experience After mid september Sauvies generally does not blow - period. Doesn't blow north, east, west, south, up, down, circular, - nothin man. Thats the general rule. Last year we got a sweet day towards the end of september - lit on an 11!!! But that was the last day of pretty much any wind until the spring.

Thanks - it has been so warm - with at least some to breeze - I was hoping that it would go one forever - ha. So not to drift,
but it seems that the wind reverses at Sauvies from northish to south and in at least parts of the gorge (roster rock) it goes from west to east.
Are the Roster Rock east winds sort of the climax of the session besides the great events like BTOG and KB4C?
what are the best winter winds - on the coast perhaps - not to get ahead of myself - I have a lot to work on, just wondering, as I feel like I am just getting started as the summer ends.

We do get some easterly winds towards the end of the season. Generally that the sign the season is starting to wind up. Afte the easterly days at Rooster Rock we generally will get some westerly winds.
Winter kiting - hhmmm, you may want to drive to S. Oregon for some snow kiting. Hit up Sol (Matty) - he is the head of SOKA (Souther Oregon Kite Addicts) - and he's a really cool brah.
There are spots in southern oregon that do not require a snow mobile. Most spots relatively close to portland require a snowmobile.

Rooster is the end all be all blowout place for the Gorge. Bring your lube, your favorite gay porn mag, and a small kite cause its on like donkey kong!!
For the beginners, its kind of like a "ok, how much did you really learn this year" test. High winds and even higher gusts. 30-40 knots at 10am are common.
Throw in some cold east winds from montana and wyoming and you got yourself some serious twin fin boosting, face smackin, line breaking, sand in every orafice of your body good times.

If anyone that is currently wanting to experience what it was like to learn to kite 5 years ago, grab an 03 10m fuel and a SS doyle and walk down to RR this september.
So many fond memories of my first days of kiting. Fun stuff like:
The release system that didn't release when under tension.
No dongles to keep the chicken loop in place.
Swimming to the kite to get it to fall on its back, then swimming to the side to get it at the edge of the window to relaunch.
The control bar that did next to nothing.
Patented "6 pump" inflation technology
and walking up the beach with a kite that would not depower.

I think rooster is a pretty good place to learn. I started kiting about this time of year last year and got my very first ride on an easterly at rooster. If you're really learning still, it's great in Sept to have about a mile of beach to do downwinders on to practice water starts. Of course also you have a mile long walk of shame.
Once it gets cold you definitely don't want to be dragging around in that water for hours, but if you can get up and ride it could be worth buying a small kite and all the necessary gear. I learned pretty much everything up to jumping and turning during the winter and it was nice to feel like I knew what I was doing when the masses came out of hibernation. This might require kiting alone though, which is probably a bad idea, but if you know your safety systems and have the right gear to stay warm, and you'll probably just be mowing the lawn anyway, what could possibly go wrong? (probably still plenty of things)
I forgot about the best option though: vacation down south somewhere.

| Wouldn't recommend kiting alone ever, but especially in the winter!

O yeah, easterly wind & warm but not-hot-anymore weather? Check. Strong gusts? Check! Obligatory end-of-the-season kitemare? Check!! Last September @ RR was awesome! Couldn't wait until spring for my second season.
