The Monday PM forecast was for west wind but warm temps so I took my SUP out to Sauvies for a paddle (yeah I'm a geek, but I'm old too so I don't give a rats ass what people think of me).

I'll be damned if the wind didn't come up good at about 5pm, both speed and direction, despite all predictions. That really pissed me off coz I have two new kites that I haven't even got to try yet. No one else was out at all though, so I probably wouldn't have gone out even if I'd brought my kites.

Here's the real reason I'm writing this. The beach was totally trashed. Garbage everywhere. I keep a roll of garbage bags in my pathfinder and so I cleaned up the kite beach as best possible. Beside the trash in general, I also picked up at least two six packs of GLASS bottles off the beach and in the shallow water. At least they were all unbroken bottles. Who knows what other glass might still be buried out there. It makes you wanna kill.... Evil or Very Mad

There needs to be a ban on glass bottles on the sand, and an armed vigilante stationed there to teach some manners to the ignorant scum that leave their trash on the sand.

* RANT OFF *

Dude, no shit man. Twice now there has been a burnt out camp fire with melted glass bottles at the Sandbar. I cleaned up the first one but looks like the water washed away the second one. The Picnic tables keep getting moved down to the sand. I know its some kids, AND I'M GOING TO FIND YOU! STOP BEING SO MESSY YOU LITTLE BASTARDS OR YOU WILL LOOK LIKE ME WHIT NO TEEF.

We were out there just kicking it and BBQ'ing on friday afternoon, and we couldn't believe all the cans/bottles/crap people left behind. We ended up doing a mini cleanup of our immediate area but with the type of people I usually see out there I'm not surprised one bit. On one hand I don't want cops out there hassling people but on the other I think a few littering tickets would be welcomed. You'd likely find more than a few people with arrest warrants out there, methinks!

I'm pretty sure thats non-kiter trash. This weekend was super hot and I bet it was super busy with dumb, wasted beachgoers. There wasn't any wind this weekend at SauviE Island so no kiters. THs msot trash I've ever seen kiters leave is one case of empty pabst cans and a bunch of Lost and Found kite gear.

That beach gets a lot of traffic from dull folks who leave a trail of sharpness--glass, fishhooks, even a used syringe last summer. There's no explaining beach finds. Last weekend we were at Seaside and next thing I know the kids are tossing at each other (and laughing at) a pair of XXXL men's (mostly) white briefs complete with a big turd right there where you'd expect a turd to fall if you somehow crapped your pants while strolling on the beach. How? Why? An adult crapped his shorts, then stripped them off and left them on the beach? I can only hope it was the only part of the meal that the shark spit out.

Unfortunately I saw all that trash there at Sauvies. It totally sucked to see it all. Its left by a bunch of people who don't give a shit about the place - don't care if it looks trashed or not Mad

SI is notorious for people who litter. This sounds bad, but there seems to be a inverse correlation between income level and littering. I don't think it is the kiting crew that leaves much trash. Regardless of where one rides, camps, sails, bike rides, leave that place better than you found it. Doesn't take much effort to pick-up an extra wrapper or can. . .

Also, with the exceptional high water due to the snow melt, all the debris on shores and beaches that normally would be dry is being flushed down stream. . .this includes everything. Tons of wood in the Multnomah channel on Monday evening when I went kayaking. SI beach may have some new logs deposited before the high water recedes. Side note, there probably will be a lot more debris out in the ocean because of this affect, so keep your eyes peeled while pearling on that wave.

I was out there Saturday and I had never seen so many people. I waited in line for 20 minutes at the cracker barrel to get a parking permit. Then I couldn't find a parking spot until I got to the gravel parking lot way past the nudie beach at the end of the road.

OK, here's the strange deal. Besides just trash, all the bottles I picked up except one were refundable deposit bottles. Are the poor fuckers getting too drunk to want to get their bottle return refund? Maybe the deposit should be bumped up to $0.25/bottle or something.

And this is going to sound really bad too, but I'm afraid it was mostly mexicans given the type of trash (including believe it or not, tortillas....). I hate to stereotype people, but I think in general new immigrants from mexico just don't seem to have the same concern about dumping trash in public places. I don't think it has anything to do with whether they are otherwise nice people or not. I think it's a cultural upbringing thing coz it was the same deal when I lived in Puerto Rico. Folks in PR think nothing of dropping trash anywhere they feel like it. The non-tourist beaches in PR have a high glass to sand content.

Maybe we need some of those nice bilingual signs talking about huge fines for littering. And some non-confrontational educational discussions with the ignorant offenders about local etiquette. I think they just don't understand that littering here is a considered bad thing. Non-immigrants should know better and should just have their ass kicked.

Can you imagine dragging across a broken bottle in your bare feet? Or bringing your kite down on broken glass? We need to do something so we don' t end up beaches like we had in PR.

I think I might be offended if I didn't find this funny - so we got poor mexicans leaving tortillas around SI.

Good point! Maybe its rich mexicans. That would explain the stray tortillas and lack of concern about bottle refunds Smile

Man, there are 2 things that really just piss me off (okay, there's probably more). 1) People who steal other peoples things, and 2) People who litter.
....reward for someone who finds the perp's and trashes them! Twisted Evil
