Has anyone flown the T2 with a direct 1:1 bar? What are your thoughts on performance and safety? Just curious since the T3 is being marketed as 1:1 direct or 2:1 with pulleys.

Shy and Tucker have with the T2s... Said it works, but not great. Obviously you'll have lighter bar pressure, but it doesn't have the turning response. I've only flown the early T3 protos in 1:1, but I'm not used to bow kites period. Also, the production T3 bridles have been completely reworked, so I'm sure it'll be better!

yep i did it for a little while last year. i dont think i would recomend it though. it will make the kite so slow you cant turn it in a full loop. its alright for just straight wakestyle or boosting when the wind is perfect but it no good for everything else.

I havent gotten a chance to fly the production T3s yet but i know they have a totaly new bridle that makes the kite way faster when you have it rigged for 1to1

Diggy,

I will chime in a bit and explain why.......Yes, you can fly your T2 with a T3 bar. You will gain the safety of the below the bar safety system found on the 2008 bar. You will also enjoy the new moto style grip.

You will NOT be able to fly your T2 with the 1:1 conversion. The reason you can not do so is because when you convert the bar for 1:1 you also have to move the attachment points of the kite. The bridle is designed to accomodate this conversion on the T3. The T2 is only designed for a 2:1 bar.

The T2 is a great kite, the T3 is very similar but has the ability to fly 1;1 for lighter bar pressure and below the bar safety.

So far I have only flown the T3 on the snow, but in the 2:1 mode it felt very similar to the T2. I will post more once I get on the water with them.

I tried Tucker's 1:1 setup on a T2 once and it was scary, kite would not turn.

T2 is a bow kite, use the pulleys. If you don't like them maybe look at a hybrid like the Rev. I know they are saying the T3 can fly 1:1, but I get the feeling that it will be most at home on a 2:1 setup.

I agree with PKH to a certain degree........The T3 is a totally different kite han the Rev. It does fly good in the 1:1 mode, just different. The Rev has a different turning radius than the Rev, the pull and de-power is different too. The bar pressure of the T3 in 1:1 mode is pretty dang light, but the kite turns faster and de-powers better, with more range in 2:1 mode.

I can't wait to get the T3 out into the waves this Summer! I will ride it in the 2:1 mode at the coast and put it through it's paces in the 1:1 mode in the Gorge. Also on brutally gusty days in the Gorge with a lot of up and down the 2:1 mode will be awesome.

If anyone wants to ride mine, just ask......

So kites that you can ride either 1:1 or 2:1, the 2:1 set up will make them all turn quicker? I am trying to decide if I want to ride my 07 boxers in the 2:1. Only used the 1:1 so far.

MS,
Hopefully Mark Barnes or Nick will chime in on this one......My guess is that your Boxer should turn faster in the 2:1 mode simply because you have more of a mechanical advantage, thus giving more tension on the steering line with less input at the bar. The trade off will be more bar pressure. I hope this helps with your question.
I think that you should try it both ways and then decide what works better for your taste.

Sorry to bump this but I have a new T3 11m and trying to figure out why I would go to a 1:1. The instructions say that you still use the pulley at the bridle, it is just moved forward to the next connection setting.

Also, from reading this post it sounds like there is something that gets changed at the bar too. I can't find any discussion about the bar, or differences of the flying characteristics in the user manual or website.

Any help would be appreciated.

Barfly,

In 1:1 the kite will have a lot less bar pressure and direct feel. Give it a try and see if you like it. I havn't ridden mine in the 1:1 mode on the water yet, just the snow.
What size T3s did you get? The5 uses a 17 inch bar ,the 7,9 &11 use the 20 inch bar and the 14 uses a 23 inch bar.
I set up one of my 20 inch bars in the 1:1 mode and left the other in 2:1 mode, that way all I have to do is change the connections at the kite.
If you need setup instructions, feel free to ask and I will help you out.
Steve

Thanks Steve. I bought an 11m. I also have a 5m T2. In between, I'm staying with 7 and 11 Fuels so I don't have a bar swapping option. Do you know of a document that shows how to change the bar out? Otherwise, PM me and maybe we can go over it on the phone. -Tony

I set my t3 7 in 1-1 have not got to much time on it but it seems good. 7 always turn and depower pretty fast. The instructions were ok on how to do the conversion but I called the ss rider hot line to double check a few things, they were great.

Tony,

Then click on QSG. Go to page 2 and then see the bar conversion document and give it a try. Basicly, you are eliminating the pully at the bar and adding the leaderline pigtail that is located in the "kite pocket". If that doesn't make it clear, let me know and I will give you a ring.

I wish I could ride my T2s with 1:1. I cant control the bar with one hand since the bar pressure is so high. If i grip the bar right next to the centerlines, I still cant prevent the kite from turn that direction... I think this is part of the reason I can't seem to ever retrieve boards for anybody. Once I'm going I'm alright as the upper steering line needs more tension anyways, but I don't see a one-handed water-start with my T2's anytime in my future
