Fri Sep 14, 07 9:01 am Warm exoitc places to kite in February. |

In some strange lapse of judgment, my new wife told em the folowing things:
A. she wants to take KB lessons (WTF?, she is THE most unlikely kiter) and B. told me "maybe we should honeymoon in Caberete, you can KB there right?" DUDE! I'm going to get to kite on my honeymoon? this married shit is alright!
So, the question is..does anyone know of any tropical spots that get good wind around February. I'm thinking virgin islands, DM, or perhaps the Yucatan. I'm not super down with Cabarete as it sounds pretty touristy. It would be nice to have some kite resouces but I'm trying to avoid the rapid tourist set ups. (think of Cabo in December or any south Thailand beach in the winter).
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Cozumel
Adrian can give her lessons while your kiting. Plus there is a lot of other stuff to do if its not windy.

Cabarrete - we went there 2 years ago in mid Feb and wind was 60% (kited 6 out of 10) with some no kiting days. Really pretty, romantic, but probably not the best place to be a beginner kiter. Here's a pic from the Agualina Hotel. Downside - all day on the plane and expensive flights. Limited night life
Cozumel - we went there last Feb with wind 40-50% (kited 4 days out of 10). Not real pretty after the huricanes. Good night life.

Mui Ne, Vietnam.
Plenty of schools to teach her right in front of your bungalow.
Sure it's a long flight, but dude time to join the mile high club!

yeah, I saw that article also. problem is, i only have a week. It takes 3-4 days just to bounce back from those asian flights. Truth be told though, I would go Thailand before Vietnam. Cleaner, faster, and just plain easier. What can I say, I'm old (plus I've done the sleep on the ground, ride in the back of pick-ups with goats, spend weeks on end sharting yourself thing already).

I would avoid Cancun, Playa or Cozumel - very good odds of getting skunked...

I went to Cabarete in April and kited 6 out of 8 days. I also stayed at the Agualina, and loved it. You can walk out your back door to go kiting. You can also leave your gear at home since the Dare2Fly center there (see their flags in Carol's Pics) rents Cabrinah kites. It was an awesome place to vacation. I did not even have to launch my own kite since THEY WILL LAUNCH IT FOR YOU. You just hook in and go. When you're done kiting, you can take a refreshing dip in the pool. There is also tons of night life in Cabarete. Losts of restaraunts and bars right on the Beach. For a honeymoon, you should alos check out the El Magnifico Resort!
If you want to seek wind in February, maybe you should consider Los Roques, Coche, or Margarita! Los Roques gets wind 15+ 90% of the days in February. You can't get too much more remote than Los Roques either. It is a marine sanctuary for Venezuela.

I did a honeymoon in Cabarete this July, awesome. Wife took lessons there, which I would not recomend due to the shore break. Flatwater lessons are way better, but the intructors at Laurel Eastmans school are awesome. The town is not too touristy and its pretty small. I would recomenmd it over Mui Ne as well as there is more to do and it is more romantic.
PM me if you want more details.

consider st lucia, which imho is the most underreported spot around.
vieux fort: cheap lodging, very safe and beautiful beach.
search anything that includes the reef/st lucia kiteboarding.
restaurant right at the lauch.
very quiet, not touristy, smooth reliable winds.

I would reccomend Cabarete, I just came back from a 10 days holiday on Kitebeach. 8 days out of 10. My girlfriend took lessons at Kitexcite, she had a great time, learning with radio helmets, boat assistance and highly qualified instructors. We stayed next to Agualina, at Kitebeach hotel, right on the beach as well, quite the same amenities h2om described.
Nightlife was great also, I heard they at some kind of earlier closing time before but now this is over and the party goes on untill 3 to 4 AM every night.
I had no time to do it but there is plenty of activities on no wind days, I m thinking about going back there and try paragliding. The school where my wife got her lessons is offering lessons for begginers on no wind days. They do it right on the beach using a tow installed in the same boat they use for teaching. It looks like a lot of fun... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Slb0DQJYXJc
