Fri Jul 27, 07 10:43 pm heads up launch |
|
|
been at your most excellent kite spot in stevenson this week.
watched two bad launches including the danglers. and countless other mishaps.
dangler: heal up.
everyone else: heads up launching and landing always. nobody should ever get hurt. it's heads up there, but if everyone pays attention all the time, nobody gets hurt.
everyone knows it is a gusty shitty launch with rocks that will hurt you. |

Brings up a good point... Stevenson has great wind but the launch is for intermediate to advance riders. Lots of other safer launches in the gorge. _________________ Cleverly disguised as an adult...

Hey Mark.
I hope that your healing goes fast.
Yes, Rex did have a similar injury from the pond at the Spit. I will have him contact you. He is up and ripping around again. You will be too.
Also, Jay Carroll busted both feet paragliding in Chamonix. I saw him out kiting the other day. So, heal up. I will try and get him to contact you also.
Keep us updated with your progress.

Mark -
Sorry to hear this, hope you recover quickly.
Yeah at low water the rocks are super slimy. Point well made; "have your kite launched at the rock beach" instead of above on the grass.
All the best,

that sucks. I would definately stop eating now. I gained 25 lbs in 2 months just sitting on the couch this spring. I even slept on the couch. Your going to have a tough row to hoe my friend, and PT is a bitch.
My advice, get some stronger pain meds and a net flix subscription. |

Gnarly. Godspeed on the recovery! I haven't even seen this rock and already I'm terrified of it. Something similar happened to a buddy of mine, jumped off a rope swing and landed on a rock submerged 2 inches below the surface. His was not a fun recovery, but that was due to his house being full of stairs. |

mark,
sorry, dude, godspeed on your recovery.
at the risk of high-jacking the thread, i cannot believe that a world-class destination like the gorge puts up with shit like the stevenson launch.
i mean, its an accident waiting to happen. i truly do not mean to be a doom-and-gloomer. but answer me this, is anyone surprized when someonw is hurt there? will you be surprized if someone is hurt badly?
is it practical to talk about finding a D-3 cat to clean up that bank, take out the buhes and put something down on the water to stand on during l & l?
what about it shay?

I'd say a lot of work has been done to make the Stevenson launch more livable. Before the sandbar cleanup I'd say on a whole much more had been done at Stevenson.
New bathrooms, new steps for the walk down to the water... looked like some fresh gravel this year. Bushes cut way back.
Rigging on grass right next to your car, I'm not complaining about a few rocks (even though they did try to kill my kite.) |

Not sure you could ever make Stevenson a beginner launch. It is what it is. Plus if you made it too easy it would quickly become to crowded. Its already a pain to "get in line" for landings ect.
There are alot of safer launches in the gorge. _________________ Cleverly disguised as an adult...

The Stevenson launch is owned by the Port of Skamania and they have been actively improving it over the last few years. Last year two of the commissioners were kiters, this year it's down to just one but the commission is still very positive on kiting, windsurfing, the PWC crowd, boaters and the recreational attributes of the area. Changes are slow due to budget considerations - not from a lack of interest.
The bushes need to stay in some form to hold the bank together through the winter but they have been trimming them shorter, they added the steps, have moved some of the larger rocks and have other improvement plans in the works. I think they're doing a great job with a marginal spot.
This is our 4th summer of kiting in Stevenson and these last two injuries are the first that we've seen here that can be attributed to the launch area. Both of them happened when the water was very low so maybe we need to be a little more cautious when we have those conditions.

Mark,
I hope you heal up quickly. Sorry about your bad luck. It sucks when someone with a lot of skill gets messed up. Thanks for always giving me a hand on launches and landings.
Best wishes. |

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Mark.
Broke my leg there on the E. side of the hill back in 02 helping a kiter in distress who got hucked over the rock jetty. Know what it's like to be taken out by the Stevenson lauch!
Four surgeries and 120K later, I'm not known to catch many kites there any more.
But my leg holds lots of good karma and I'm sure you hold lots of good Stevenson karma as well.
Best to you and fast healing,
Kirsten |
