Was out at Rooster around 4pm and it was rippin. Looked like a sweet 9-12M day.....too bad no beach for self launch. Would any sane person try inflating and rigging in parking lot, wrap lines back up, walk down stairs to water, let kite drift away until lines are taut and away you go? Sounds like a risky idea to me but was contemplating my options.
Anyone get a ride out there today? |

hmm...
i was at rooster around the same time last thurs. and same deal, perfect wind, not too hole-y either....I wasn't sure what too do.. I know you could rig, get the kite to the water, and probably drift launch, but not the safest procedure. that wind in close to the stairs is usually pretty shifty anyways.....were the pilings still submerged?
I would say the best bet is to hike way up to the dune/cove and just ride in there....Worth the deep water hike up there..Plus some nice flat stuff. |

the pilings were probably showing about 4"-10"....meaning I could clearly tell where they were. looked like the swath in front of the ranger station was a nice place to tack back and forth. Wind to the East seemed a little bit cleaner as usual.
How is the footing on the hike up? Do you hug the right until you get to the island? Never wander that way as I'm afraid of a solo mission into the VS territory... |

No comment on the sanity factor but I have done what you describe. I think I've heard some call it a "drift launch".
Nice and easy, rig on the grass, and just make sure as your walking down that you keep your lines right. I think the main thing to avoid is rolling the lines around the kite so that the back and fronts end up crossed....this isn't that critical though, the kite will still fly. There is usually a lot of shallow water just in front of the bathrooms/office. But your above the pilings which carries some risk for sure.
If the wind is filled in down there is sure beats the long schlog.

I have explored RR ALOT at high water. I have also explored almost every accessable mile of river between Portland and Hood River on both Oregon and Washingon sides. My reccomendation is grab a couple of your bro's and:
1. DW from Dalton's to RR - Not a great launch, but in my opinion is better than drift launch +you don't have to stay upwind.
2. Stevenson
3. Becon Rock SP - very West end of park. Grassy rigging, with river-rock launch - This launch is good at any river depth, but does have some small trees and brush, and does have a stong current. Only good when it's nukin @ RR. *You can self launch here. Downwinder potential. I checked it out today, and it's totally do-able and much better than the launch at RR this time of year. Not enough wind today though. *Disclaimer - only ridden here twice.. Once v. good, Once on dropping wind with less current. Did not Self launch.
4. Airport. Can work, but the couple of times I've been there, the current was very strong, and it wasn't the best.
Anyway, I know this has been kicked around for years, but I love to explore and share - C
P.S> anyone try Viento when the water is high? |
