Maybe not so close, but Shinnecock Bay in the hamptons is good for windsurfing. (back in the 80's!) Probably good for kiting I would think.

here's a nearby link..

There is some good riding out on Long Island, both ocean side and soundside. Napegue is the name of the place most people ride on the sound, and then there are a number of ocean access state parks.

Did a downwinder there in 03 after evacuating Hatteras for the hurricane. Had clear skies nuking wind, (rode wipi 4.8m) and GIANT waves pushed up from the cane. One of the craziest and most memorable sessions ever.

They also ride on Lake Erie up near Buffalo. It's quite a drive ~7hrs but I don't know where you will be at. I have also riden on Seneca Lake last year, and Canandaigua Lake is known for local windsurfing. I had a contact that I found on iwindsurf.com about local areas.

If your near Western NY, give http://www.myerskitesurfing.com/ a shout. I have yet to meet them but I'm talked to them a few times.

Let me know where you ride so I could check it out when I'm visiting the folks Laughing Laughing

If you're doing a 2-3 hour drive, consider South Jersey.... seriously...just hop on the Garden State Parkway+ head south towards Atlantic City....

Great flatwater bays ( Lakes Bay or Long Beach Island)...or oceanwaves( brigantine, ocean city)....in the spring + early summer we have sweet thermals..

check out http://www.atlantickiteboarding.com. + go to the local forum for any other ?'s if you decide to go..

Hope to c U!

Our season is starting now ( well, here in S.Jersey), but the best time is usually in May, June and July. That's when the thermals really kick in~ S +SW is the best wind direction. Water temp is nice + warm by then ..I'm usually on a 12M in the morning, + by the afternoon, could be riding a 7M.

Lakes Bay (IMHO), is one of the top places in Jersey for catching the thermals...that's about 5 minutes outside of Atlantic City~
Or about 15 minutes from Lakes, we can do Ocean down-winders, Brigantine, + Ocean City are top beaches. After Memorial Day, it's best to check with the life-guards...Sometimes we'll wait till after 5P so most of the crowds are gone for the day.

I don't know too much about the northern beaches. Sandy Hook is pretty close to NYC. A few of the folks on the atlantickiteboarding forum go there-- they might be able to give you more info about that location

hope that helps some

Thanks for the info and the link...I may be in NYC for a couple of years starting this Fall so it's time to figure out if keeping the car is worth it or not, and of course that depends on the neighborhood.

Your welcome. They are a good group so I'm sure they'll answer many of your questions:-) They were also featured in our March/April issue in the article Forum Face-Off which spotlighted many of NA's forum leaders, including your very own NWkite founder. The online version of the mag will be uploaded next week....

moving from the NW to NYC.. that's quite a change!

Colby,
If you're going to be living there for a while.. the best riding is not around NYC, but rather affordably attainable flying out of NY.

Ususally you can get to Puerto Rico or Cape Hatteras for about $100 each way. Jet Blue has a direct flight from JFK to Aguadilla PR, which is sick and lands you only 1/2 hour from Shacks, a right reef-point break. Very easy to do for a SICK waveriding long weekend and usually can be planned around the swell.

Check out Soul Fly video for Shacks footage of Pete Trow and Josh Mulcoy.

Marina, looking forward to that issue - PKH has serious web & mediation talents and runs this whole site on donations only....

Thanks Tekko, I have family in PR & Florida so ditching the car payments for flights looks to be a no-brainer if they are that cheap, especially if I can squeeze in short 3 day weekend trips into my work schedule.

Confirmation: Shacks is (in bro terminology) 'sick.' In 90's NBA rap terminology, the break is 'Shaqs Diesel.'
