Tue Mar 20, 07 1:59 pm $300 REAL deal, for real? |
|

Looking on the REAL website I noticed that for $300 you can get a
2006 20m Liquid Force M80 ($199)
120cm Liquid Force MLF (free with $300 purchase)
2006 Liquid Force Harness ($79)
Instructional DVD ($29)
That seemed like a pretty unreal deal. Okay enough of the puns, but it seems like a sweet deal.
I don't know if that make a good light wind kite or if its all crap?
Pretty small board, but might be fun to play around with.
Thoughts? |

Just what you want to see a beginner buying.....
A 20 meter kite
Sounds "REAL" interesting..... _________________ Cleverly disguised as an adult...

I guess I was mostly impressed that you can get a full rig NEW for $300. I was interested in a discussion about the price of kites falling exponentially, not discussing the merits of a 20m kite with a 120 cm board. |

I think there's just getting to be more companies and more gear on the market. That's good for riders in terms of selection & price, but might hurt companies. Maybe less $ for R&D too.
Then there's the massive used gear market w/ kites a year or two old being very rideable and 1/3-1/10 of the cost of a new rig! So people don't need to get brand new stuff. Sales from used sellers usually go toward new gear. And on it goes! |

just as with the snowboard industry i'm sure there's a shake out waiting to happen. those that are financially sound and have invested in r/d as well as branding will likely survive. those whoe have not will disappear.
i would be curious to see a cost break down on a kite too. the raw materials are not that expensive. especially since you buy in bulk and in basic colors. labor and o/h is also low since there is not much in the way of assembly. especially since the RMB is held fairly static. it's mostly all in the cutting and stitching. and stitchers come cheap in SE china. the welds on a bladder should be the same regardless of size, strut, or le. so those amortized over the volume of bladders has got to keep it super low....like under $0.50. what more?
so basically we pay for r/d and the advancement of a new sport. all in all, a fairly good value. a little high, but understandable. |

Out sailing while the small kite snobs are waiting for their season to start!
P.S. Yesterday was really fun on the coast (if you had a big kite). |
